AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas soccer team fell 1-0 to the undefeated New Mexico Lobos (7-0-2) Sunday afternoon out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Lobos got on the board seven minutes into the match and were able to hold on moving Texas to 3-5-0 on the season.
The Lobos, who have only allowed three goals all season, held the Longhorns scoreless for just the second time this year.
UNM's leading scorer Jennifer Williams netted the match's lone goal in the seventh minute. Jess Quador slipped the ball into Williams, who was open in the middle of the box. Williams then fired her shot past UT keeper Alexa Gaul into the lower left corner of the net for the gamewinner.
Texas had a few good opportunities in the second half to even the score with its best look coming from Hannah Higgins in the 65th minute. The freshman forward broke away from the New Mexico defense and had a one-on-one with UNM keeper Kelli Cornell but fired her attempt just high sending it over the cross bar.
Gaul made a season-high six saves, including five in the second half. Texas was led in shots by sophomore Amanda Lisberger and junior Alisha Ortiz who each recorded two.
The Longhorns open Big 12 Conference play next weekend on the road as they travel to Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 25 (7 p.m. Central) and then face Baylor on Sunday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m. Central).
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the game overall: I thought we actually played alright. We were much better with the ball. The difference in the game came down to the fact that they had one real opportunity in the box and they finished, and we had two but didn't.
On having only a few substitues: Only four substitutes was a little difficult due to the heat. But, the game is still 11 versus 11, regardless of the subs.
On the performance from the freshmen: We've given them a lot of responsibility and, overall, they are performing very well.
