AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas-Ex Luis Diaz Barriga has been selected to represent his native Mexico in this year's installment of the Davis Cup, the annual international team tennis competition.
"It's always exciting to see our current and former players continue to improve, and Luis' last two years at Texas were really remarkable," said UT head coach Michael Center. "Luis has had the opportunity to play a lot of tennis on the ATP Tour, and I know his best tennis is still in front of him."
Diaz Barriga (2005-08), who has ranked as high as No. 506 in the world in doubles and No. 751 in singles, helped the Longhorns reach the NCAA semifinals in 2006 and the NCAA championship match in 2008. Diaz Barriga totaled a 31-6 overall singles record during his 2008 senior campaign, including a 23-3 mark in dual matches.
Diaz Barriga teamed up with Texas-Ex Miguel Reyes Varela to register a 16-4 dual-match doubles record during the 2008 season, which culminated with a selection to the NCAA All-Tournament Team at No. 2 doubles. He ranks 17th on UT's all-time singles wins list with 84 victories.
