No. 15 Softball wins two at Marriott Houston Classic

HOUSTON -- The fifteenth-ranked Texas Softball team stayed undefeated with victories over Purdue and UTSA, Friday afternoon at the Marriott Houston Classic. The Longhorns downed Purdue, 6-5 in the first game and edged UTSA, 3-2 in the nightcap. Texas improved to 8-0 on the year, while Purdue dropped to 1-6 and UTSA fell to 2-4.
Freshman righthander Kim Bruins (3-0) picked up the victory in game one, throwing 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits, walking two and fanning two. Freshman hurler Blaire Luna came on with two outs in the seventh and recorded a strikeout to end the game and earn her second save of the season. Purdue starter Julia Rice (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and walking two in 1.1 innings of action.
In the nightcap, Luna (4-0) picked up the victory after firing the final three frames. She came on in relief of senior starter Erin Tresselt, allowing zero hits and fanning six. Tresselt threw 4.0 innings, scattered six hits, allowed two runs and struck out three. UTSA starter Danye Holmes went the distance for the Roadrunners, throwing 6.0 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out four.
Sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor headlined the UT offense in game one with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored. Junior second baseman Raygan Feight and Bruins each added two RBI, with Feight connecting for a two-run homer.
Texas' offense was powered by a pair of home runs in game two, with senior shortstop Loryn Johnson delivering the first blow with a two-run shot. A solo homer by sophomore designated player Lexy Bennett broke a 2-2 tie and lifted UT to a 3-2 win.
The Horns return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when they play Louisiana Lafayette at the Houston Classic. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. Central
Game 1: Texas 6, Purdue 5
Texas started the scoring in the second with a single to centerfield by Bruins that scored two and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Shelby Savony that scored Feight to give UT a 3-0 edge. In the fourth, the Boilermakers took advantage of a leadoff double by Ashley Barr and a UT error shrink the lead to 3-1. Texas added two more runs in the fourth when Feight delivered a two-run homer that narrowly cleared the wall in left centerfield. An RBI single by freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland plated another UT run in the fifth and pushed the score to 6-1.
Purdue rallied in the seventh, using a leadoff homer by Elizabeth Allum to start the rally. The Boilermakers followed with a single by Molly Garst and an RBI single by Erika Petruzzi that narrowed the lead to 6-3. Purdue put another runner on with a walk before a two-run double by Shelby Krammer moved the tally to 6-5. Luna came on with two outs in the frame and closed the door on the Boilermakers rally.
Game 2: Texas 3, UTSA 2
UTSA grabbed the early advantage on a two-run home run by Caitlyn Ivy in the third, but Texas answered later in the frame with a two-run shot of its own. Sophomore centerfielder Courtney Craig got on to start the rally and Johnson's two-run homer evened the tally at two. In the sixth, Texas broke the 2-2 tie when Bennett launched a solo home run to left centerfield.
