No. 17 Softball sweeps doubleheader at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO -- The No. 17 Texas Softball team received a pair of solid relief performances by freshman righthander Blaire Luna to sweep both ends of its doubleheader at UTSA, Tuesday night. The Longhorns posted an 8-7 win in game one and a 4-3 victory in the nightcap to improve to 28-8 on the season, while the Roadrunners dropped to 10-23.
Freshman righthander Kim Bruins (7-3) picked up the victory in game one, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits, while walking two and fanning five. Luna fired the final 1.1 innings and struck out four to pick up her first save of the day. UTSA starter Emily Humpal (5-11) suffered the loss for the Roadrunners, throwing 5.0 innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out five.
Senior shortstop Loryn Johnson's RBI single in the sixth inning plated sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor, scoring Texas' eighth run of the game, which proved to be the game-winning tally.
Taylor and junior catcher Amy Hooks paced the Texas offense in game one with a pair of two-hit efforts. Hooks added two RBI, while junior pinch hitter Shelby Savony posted a team-high three RBI with her three-run homer. Freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland failed to register a hit in the game, going 0-for-4 with a walk and one run scored, bringing her 21-game hitting streak to an end.
Senior starter Erin Tresselt (6-1) earned the victory in the nightcap, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three. Luna earned her second save of the day and fourth of the season after throwing 3.0 no-hit inning with four strikeouts to close out the game. Humpal took the loss in the second game as well, giving up one run on one hit and striking out one in 1.0 inning of work.
Texas used a pair of two-run homers by Johnson and Hoagland in the fifth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and take a 4-3 lead.
Johnson headlined the Texas offense in game two with a 3-for-4 performance that included two RBI and one run scored. Hoagland bounced back in game two with two hits, two RBI and one run scored.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 when it plays host to Texas State. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Central.
Game 1: Texas 8, UTSA 7
Texas got on the board quickly in the first, using a leadoff walk by Hoagland to start the frame and an RBI single by Hooks to take a 1-0 edge. UTSA evened the tally at one in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a leadoff single by centerfielder Rudi Cantu and an RBI single by shortstop Caitlyn Ivy to push the tally to 1-1.
The Horns reclaimed the lead in the second with a solo home run to right centerfield by senior rightfielder Tallie Thrasher. In the third, UT pushed a single run across for the third straight inning courtesy of a leadoff double by sophomore first baseman Lexy Bennett and a RBI double by Hooks.
The Roadrunners narrowed the lead to 3-2 in the fourth when third baseman Nikki Goff launched a two-out solo home run to leftfield.
Texas padded its lead in the fifth when Savony launched her ninth home run of the season -a three-run shot- to increase the margin to 6-2. Sophomore outfielder Courtney Craig followed with a double and she came around to score on a UTSA throwing error to push the lead to five. The Horns added a single tally in the sixth, using a leadoff single by Taylor and an RBI single by Johnson to take an 8-2 advantage.
UTSA battled back in the sixth, registering five runs on five hits and one Texas error. The Roadrunners started the inning with four straight singles before an RBI groundout by Kelly Cato plated one run. An error allowed the second run to score and an RBI single by Cantu pushed a third run across. Second baseman Ashley Kappler added a walk and Ivy came through with a two-run double to close the score to 8-7.
Game 2: Texas 4, UTSA 3
UTSA jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, with Cantu connecting for a leadoff solo homer and Ivy roping a two-run shot to leftfield.
After being held scoreless for four innings, Texas' offense came to life in the fifth, recording four runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead. Craig led off the frame with a single and then came home on a two-run home run tao right centerfield by Hoagland. Bennett kept the rally alive with a single and she scored when Johnson launched a two-run homer to straightaway centerfield to give UT the lead.
