MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The No. 2 Texas Longhorns were doomed by seven issued walks and 11 runners left on base in a 2-1 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats on Friday evening.
Kansas State (32-13, 11-7) took advantage of three walks by Texas starter Taylor Jungmann in the fifth inning to score their only runs of the game. Tanner Witt and Adam Muenster drew back-to-back walks to lead off the frame. After a fly out by Carter Jurica, Nick Martini drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch on an offering to Nick Dellasega allowed Witt to score the seal-breaker. With two runners in scoring position, Dellasega grounded out to the shortstop to plate Muenster, staking the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead.
Texas scored its lone run in the top of the sixth inning. After Russell Moldenhauer singled to rightfield with two outs, Connor Rowe followed with a double to the gap in right centerfield to score Moldenhauer on a bang-bang play at the plate.
The Longhorns stranded a combined seven runners in the first three innings. One-out singles by Brandon Loy and Tant Shepherd put a pair on for Texas in the first, but a strikeout and a runner's interference prevented any damage in the inning.
In the second inning, Kevin Lusson drew a walk, Moldenhauer doubled to left centerfield to put a pair in scoring position with no outs. After Rowe popped up a squeeze bunt attempt for the first out of the inning, Jordan Etier was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cohl Walla and Loy both grounded into fielder's choice to end the inning.
Shepherd hit a leadoff double in the third inning and moved to third on a groundout by Cameron Rupp, but Kevin Keyes struck out looking and, after a walk by Lusson, Moldenhauer flied out to right field.
Texas also left a pair on in the eighth inning and one in the ninth.
Kansas State also missed out on scoring opportunities early in the game. Jungmann alternated walks with outs in the first inning to load the bases, but got Blair DeBord to strike out swinging with the bases loaded.
The Wildcats got the leadoff man on in the second and he found his way to third with two outs, before Carter Jurica popped out to the catcher.
Jungmann (4-2) was saddled with the loss, yielding two runs on one hit, seven walks, one hit batter and one wild pitch while striking out four over 5.2 innings. Hoby Milner worked 1.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out two. Chance Ruffin fanned one of the two batters he faced in 0.2 innings.
Kyle Hunter (8-0) earned the win for Kansas State. He allowed one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.0 innings. Evan Marshall followed with 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out one. James Allen worked the final 1.1 shutout innings, walking one, to get his sixth save of the season.
Brandon Loy, Tant Shepherd and Moldenhauer each had two hits for the Longhorns. Loy, Shepherd, Moldenhauer and Rowe accounted for all of UT's extra-base hits with one double apiece.
The Longhorns and Wildcats return to action on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. contest at Tointon Family Stadium. The game is set for telecast on FCS Central.
