MADISON, Wisc. -- Running with 20 ranked teams and 38 overall squads from around the country, the Texas Men's Cross Country team put together a strong showing to finish sixth overall at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wisc. on Friday.
"We accomplished our goals heading into today by running together as group, running hard, running tough and staying healthy," said distance coach John Hayes. "For three of our guys to stay together in a group, it helped them and helped the entire team. I thought our team had a good day and probably nobody else here saw us finishing as high as sixth but we think we have a pretty good team."
The Longhorns were led by freshman Craig Lutz and sophomore Ryan Dohner who each finished in the top 25 individually. Lutz, a native of Highland Village, Texas, completed the race in 23:47 to come in 15th overall. Dohner ran the course in 24:15 for a 24th place finish.
It was the trio of Collin Smith, Rory Tunningley and Mark Pinales who helped UT to its high finish as the three runners finished within six places of each other. The three were all within seconds of each other in a tight group with Smith (84th) running the race in 24:44 while Tunningley (87th) and Pinales (90th) each clocked a time of 24:45.
Also running for Texas were Brock Simmons and Will Nation. Simmons had a time of 25:15 and Nation was one second behind with a time of 25:16.
Other members of the men's cross country team will be in action tomorrow at the Concordia Invitational which will be held at Cedar Park High School in Cedar Park, Texas. The race is scheduled to start at 8:45 a.m.
