AUSTIN, Texas --- The No. 5 Texas Longhorns pounded out a season-high 14 hits and got another strong pitching performance from junior right-hander Taylor Jungmann in an 8-0 win over the Brown Bears at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.
Jungmann (4-0) had four strikeouts and allowed just three hits and two walks over 8.0 shutout innings. He improved his ERA to 0.78 on the year. The win increased Jungmann's all time record as a starting pitcher to 13-0 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas, who entered the game with only six first-inning runs on the season, pounced early for four runs in the bottom of the first. Paul Montalbano started off the inning with a single to right. Brandon Loy bunted for a hit, allowing Montalbano to aggressively round and make it to third standing up without a throw. Mark Payton bunted for another hit, advancing Loy to second and bringing Montalbano home for the first run of the game. Erich Weiss followed up with a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. With one out, an error on a ground ball by Cohl Walla inflated the cushion to 2-0 and after Walla stole second base and Tant Shepherd walked to load the bases, Jacob Felts laced a two-run single through the left side of the infield for the 4-0 lead.
The Horns kept their momentum alive in the home half of third as Jonathan Walsh started off with an infield single. Shepherd ripped a triple to right center, bringing in Walsh with one out. Jordan Etier bounced a single through the left side of the infield to give Texas a 6-0 lead.
Texas (9-4) extended their lead by another run in the seventh. Weiss hit a lead off single up the middle to begin the inning. An error on a pick off attempt and a wild pitch by Brown reliever Connor Burke allowed Weiss to move to third. With one out in the inning, Walla walked to put runners on the corners. Another botched pick off attempt brought Weiss into score.
The Longhorns capped off the scoring with a run in the eighth. Etier led off with a double to the gap in left centerfield. Montalbano followed up with a single into rightfield that brought Etier home for the 8-0 advantage
Kiefer Nuncio finished the game off with a scoreless ninth on the mound for Texas. He allowed one walk and fanned one in the four batters he faced.
It marked the fourth shutout of the season for the Longhorns and Texas pitchers have not allowed an earned run in the last 21 innings.
Loy led the Longhorns attack, going 3-for-5 with one double and one stolen base. Montalbano, Walsh, Felts and Etier recorded two hits apiece.
For Brown (0-4), Daniel Massey recorded two of the squad's three hits.
Matthew Kimball (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed six runs (three earned) on 11 hits and one walk while striking out three over 6.0 innings.
Texas and Brown are back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at UFCU Disch Falk Field. The first game is slated for 12 p.m. with the second game following 30 minutes after the completion of third.

On tonight's game: It was our best game of the year. Taylor (Jungmann) did his thing and (Keifer) Nuncio came in and did what he was supposed to do and kept control of the game. Taylor did not have his best tuff tonight but it is impressive when you can be short of your best stuff and throw a three-hit shutout for 8.0 innings. We took him out not because he was tired or hurting it was because he went 114 pitches then 118 pitched back to back in two games he completed and we just didn't want to run his pitch count up so we took him out at 90 pitched. We had the highest level of quality at-bats in this game especially in the first five innings and as a result of that we scored a bunch of runs.

On battling through the game: I fought about every pitch that I had. It was pretty bad out there. About the third inning I started to get a little more comfortable. I threw about 90 percent fastballs today. I was just struggling through it and fighting through. If you can spot up a fastball usually you can get the job.

On today's performance: We slowed things down, saw the ball better and stuff fell for us today. We have had some games where we have hit balls hard and they have not fallen for us. So today the baseball gods were on our side and we hit the ball hard and things went our way.

On Coach Garrido's perspective on at-bats: Coach (Garrido) is all about taking quality at-bats and he does not care if you strike out or pop up as long as you take quality at-bats. As long as you don't swing at bad pitches and you stay within yourself and get a pitch you can drive.
