AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman Erich Weiss helped No. 5 Texas overcome a 3-0 deficit on one pitch with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, lifting the Longhorns to a 4-3 victory over the Brown Bears at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday.
Texas (10-4) struggled to get its offense going throughout the first half of the game against Brown starting pitcher Kevin Carlow, but Weiss' home run would be all the Longhorns would need in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Bears (0-5) opened up the game with two runs in the top of the first. With one out, Ryan Zrenda singled to right field, reaching second on a Matt Colantonio sacrifice bunt and moving to third on a wild pitch. After Pete Greskoff walked, Mike DiBiase sent an RBI double to right to bring in Zrenda. Greskoff was close behind, scoring on an error on Texas right fielder Mark Payton.
Brown added a run in the top of the fifth. John Sheridan led off the inning with a single to center and Zrenda reached on a walk. Sheridan was thrown out with Zrenda advancing to second on the throw on an attempted double steal. Colantonio was retired moving Zrenda to third, and Greskoff singled to bring in the run.
The Longhorns took the lead in impressive fashion in the bottom half of the inning on Weiss' grand slam, the first for Texas this season. With one out, Jordan Etier and Paul Montalbano hit back-to-back singles. Brandon Loy loaded the bases on a bunt with an error credited to Carlow. Payton reached on a fielder's choice with Etier being thrown out at home, which set up Weiss' bases-clearing home run to right field.
Hoby Milner (2-0) picked up his second win of the season on the mound for Texas, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.0 innings. Corey Knebel recorded his third save in relief of Milner. He fanned two of the six batters he faced in 2.0 scoreless innings.
Carlow (0-2) took the loss for Brown, giving up the grand slam while scattering six hits and three walks over six innings and striking out three.
Montalbano and Etier each posted two hits for the Longhorns.
