No. 6 Baseball loses to Texas Tech, 2-1, as late rally falls short

AUSTIN, Texas—The No. 6 Texas Longhorns lost to the Texas Tech Red Raiders 2-1 in the second game of a three game series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0, the Texas (26-9, 10-4 Big 12) mounted a rally in the ninth inning. Erich Weiss sparked the rally with a single to leftfield to start the frame. After Mark Payton was retired on a sharply hit ball to rightfield, Jonathan Walsh and Kevin Lusson each drew walks to load the bases. Jordan Etier cut the lead to 2-1 when he bounced a grounder to shortstop forcing the play at first base.
Tim Maitland drew a walk to reload the bases with Brandon Loy coming to the plate. Loy grounded to short to end the game.
Tech (23-14, 6-8 Big 12) was the first to break the scoring seal in the top of the second. The frame started with when Stephen Hagen bounced a single up the middle to lead off the inning. With one out, Kelby Tomlinson perfectly executed the hit-and-run, scooting a grounder to the area shortstop Loy vacated to receive a potential throw to second base on the stolen base attempt. An ill-advised throw home allowed Tomlinson to advance to second, putting a pair in scoring position.
Friday night's starting pitcher David Paiz, playing in rightfield on Saturday, provided the run support he didn't get a day before with a single to leftfield, plating Hagen and putting runners on the corners. The scoring in the inning was capped off when Reid Redman laid down a perfectly placed bunt for an RBI single.
Cole Green (2-3) was saddled with the loss for Texas. He yielded two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.0 innings. Kendal Carrillo worked 1.2 scoreless innings retiring all five batters he faced. Hoby Milner yield just a walk to five batters in 1.1 shutout innings. Corey Knebel closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth, including a strikeout.
Trey Masek (2-2) picked up the win for Texas Tech. He scattered two hits and three walks while striking out two over 6.1 scoreless innings. John Neely earned his fifth save of the season, allowing one run on one hit and four walks over 2.2 innings.
Tomlinson and Redman each logged a pair of hits to lead the Red Raiders.
The Longhorns return to action tomorrow when they face Texas Tech for the third and final game of the series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
