LAWRENCE, Kan. - Taylor Jungmann improved to 9-0 on the season and recorded his 300th career strikeout as the No. 7 Texas Longhorns cruised to a 9-0 win over the Kansas Jayhawks at Hoglund Ballpark on Thursday evening.
Junngmann yielded just one hit, a double by Kaiana Eldredge that barely eluded the glove of a diving centerfielder Paul Montalbano in the gap in left centerfield, and four walks while striking out nine over 8.0 innings to earn the victory.
Jungmann fanned Eldredge to start the seventh inning for his seventh strikeout of the game. It marked his 300th career strikeout, making the northpaw the eighth pitcher in school history to reach the plateau. Jungmann ended the game with 302 strikeouts, tied with James Street (1968-70) for seventh on the UT career list.
Texas drew first blood in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Jacob Felts dropped a single down the rightfield line and Brandon Loy followed by depositing a double down the leftfield line to put two runners in scoring position. Mark Payton drove a fly ball to centerfield and when Jason Brunansky's throw pulled catcher James Stanfield down the line, Felts toppled him jarring the ball loose on the way to home.
The Longhorns blew the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Erich Weiss hit a lead-off single through the rright side of the infield. With one out, Jonathan Walsh reached on an error by the Jayhawks' third baseman and Montalbano walked to load the bases. Jordan Etier singled through the right side and Felts walked to both tally RBI and inflate the cushion to 3-0. Loy followed with a two-run single to leftfield, Felts scored on a throwing error after a Payton bunt single and Shepherd capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly.
The cavalcade of runs continued for Texas in the ninth inning. With one out, pinch-hitter Cohl Walla was hit by a pitch. He was replaced by pinch-runner Tim Maitland at first. Jonathan Walsh moved Maitland to second with a grounder to third base and Montalbano drove him home with a sharp single to centerfield. Etier capped off the scoring with a triple to the wall in right centerfield to push Montalbano across for the 9-0 lead.
Loy let the Longhorns' hit parade going 4-for-5 with one run, two doubles and two RBI. Etier went 3-for-5 with one run, one double, one triple and two RBI. Montalbano went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple and one RBI.
Kansas (19-19) recorded two hits on the day, doubles by Eldredge and Zac Elgie, off Nathan Thornhill in the ninth inning.
Thomas Taylor (4-2) was saddled with the loss for Kansas. He yielded six runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings.
Texas and Kansas return to action on Friday with a 6 p.m. game at Hoglund Ballpark.

On the game: The game was dominated by the pitching of Taylor Jungmann. He returned to the dominance we saw early in the season. He controlled the game. He was very consistent with his fastball inside the strike zone. He stayed ahead on the hitters and we played excellent defense behind him. And we even had a couple of rallies on offense.
On Brandon Loy: Brandon Loy continues to, offensively and defensively, be one of the most brilliant players in this conference. It seems like several times a game he makes plays that no other shortstop can make and he makes them look easy. And offensively he really seems to be comfortable and he's hitting hard line drives.

On his performance: I mostly relied on my two-seam fastball to the inside corner a lot today. I had a good feel for the ball today. The breaking ball was good for me, too.
On getting his 300th career strikeout: I didn't realize I did it. I try not to worry about stats. It's about wins and losses. We got the win today, so I feel good. I'm sure looking back on it someday it will be nice to see some of those other names that have done it like Greg Swindell and Burt Hooton.

On his performance at the plate: I saw the ball well today and stayed with my plan. I came out and had fun and played hard.
On his defensive performance: The turf is what we have at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, but it was a little slicker today with the rain. The key is to charge the ball hard and not wait for it to get to you because the turf is slower today.
