OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Junior pitcher Taylor Jungmann settled down after allowing a run in the opening frame and improved to 13-0 on the year with a complete-game, one-hitter as the No. 2 Texas Longhorns registered a 6-1 win over the Baylor Bears in an elimination game at RedHawks Field on Thursday morning.
Baylor tallied its lone run and hit of the game in the first inning to take the early lead, but Jungmann would not allow a hit through the next eight innings. After walking Logan Vick with two outs in the second inning, the northpaw retired the next 16 batters he faced before walking Joey Hansfurther to start the eighth inning.
Jungmann, the 2011 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, tallied his fifth complete-game of the season and ended the game with a 0.95 ERA. In addition to the one hit, he yielded four walks while striking out seven. He continued the nation's longest active win streak with his 15th consecutive victory. His last loss came at the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, a 4-2 loss to Texas Tech in which he yielded four runs, three unearned over 6.0 innings.
For the second straight game, the Longhorns' opponent got each of its first two batters on base. Brooks Pinckard drew a six-pitch walk, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by Max Muncy. After Muncy was retired at second trying to advance on a wild pitch, Jungmann settled down and retired the next two batters to get out of the inning with Texas trailing 1.0.
Texas (41-14) claimed its first lead of the game with a four-run fourth inning. Erich Weiss hit a leadoff single up the middle. The Longhorns caught a break when second base umpire Mike Morris said that Baylor shortstop Jake Miller was not on second base when he received a throw from Baylor starting pitcher Josh Turley on a botched sacrifice bunt attempt by Paul Montalbano.
After Jonathan Walsh singled down the third base line to load the bases, Cohl Walla gave the Horns the advantage when he roped a single into leftfield to drive in Weiss and Montalbano. Jordan Etier laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Walsh and Walla in scoring position. After Jacob Felts grounded out to second base, Brandon Loy singled down the leftfield line to give Texas a 4-1 cushion.
The Longhorns added to the lead in the seventh inning. Loy singled to centerfield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Payton. Baylor leftfielder Dan Evatt was unable to make a diving catch on a looping line drive by Tant Shepherd, resulting in an RBI single which plated Loy for the 5-1 lead.
Texas manufactured a run in the ninth inning push the margin to 6-1. Loy reached on an infield single to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Payton. With two outs, Loy stole third base and scored when catcher Josh Ludy's throw to third sailed down the leftfield line.
Loy led the Texas offense going 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, one double and one stolen base. Walla went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Etier went 2-for-3
Turley was saddled with the loss for Baylor (29-26), allowing four runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings.
The Longhorns will play the loser of this evening's Missouri-Oklahoma State contest in an elimination game at RedHawks Field at 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
