No. 5 Baseball loses Super Regional opener 3-1 to Arizona State

AUSTIN, Texas -Taylor Jungmann allowed only one earned run over 7.1 innings, but two errors by the Texas defense proved to be the difference as Texas fell to Arizona State, 3-1 in the first game of the NCAA Baseball Austin Super Regional. With the loss, Texas must win the final two games of the series to advance to the College World Series.
Arizona State (43-16) got on the board first in the top of third with two unearned runs. After Andrew Aplin reached first on a fielding error by Tant Shepherd, Johnny Ruettiger drew a one-out walk. Deven Marrero then sent a groundball back to the pitcher, but Texas second baseman Jordan Etier couldn't handle the throw from Taylor Jungmann. The ball rolled into center field and enabled Aplin to come around and score. Joey DeMichele followed with a double to shallow left field that plated Ruettiger and put the Sun Devils up 2-0.
Texas (47-17) answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Tant Shepherd reached first on an infield single and was bunted over to second by Mark Payton. Brandon Loy then sent a single through to center field that brought Shepherd home and cut the ASU lead to 2-1.
The Sun Devils added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to close out the scoring. Marrero led off the frame with a walk, and a Riccio Torrez bunt moved him into scoring position. Hoby Milner was then called from the bullpen, and he gave up a DeMichele single to left field that brought in Marrero and extended the lead to 3-1.
Taylor Jungmann (13-2) was saddled with the loss after pitching 7.1 innings, as he allowed only one earned run off of three hits and three walks, while striking out three. Milner, Kendal Carrillo, Andrew McKirahan and Corey Knebel combined to close out the final 1.2 innings, giving up only two hits between them.
Brady Rodgers (9-4) earned the win for the Sun Devils, as he tossed 6.2 innings, giving up only one run off of eight hits, while striking out four. Mitchell Lambson recorded his ninth save of the season, pitching a perfect final 2.1 innings.
Texas' offense was led by Brandon Loy, who was 1-for-4 with the only RBI for the Horns. Jacob Felts also added two hits.
Arizona State was paced by Joey DeMichele, who was 2-4 with two RBI.
Texas and Arizona State return to the diamond for game two of the NCAA Baseball Austin Super Regional on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. Central.
