Women's Golf tied for second place after first round at season-opening Texas A&M "Mo" Morial

BRYAN, Texas -- The Texas Women's Golf team carded an 11-over-par 299 on the opening day of the Texas A&M "Mo" Morial to tie for second place after Sunday's first round in the 11-team field. Senior Nicole Vandermade led the Longhorns with a 1-under 71 in her first round of the 2011-12 season to stand in third place and just one stroke behind first-round leaders Ashleigh Albrecht (Kentucky) and Carlie Yadloczky (Auburn).
Beginning her round on the 10th hole of Traditions Golf Club, Vandermade found birdie opportunities on the 12th and 14th holes to counter bogeys on Nos. 11 and 15. She closed the back nine with a pair of subpars on 17 and 18 to drop to 2-under. Vandermade climbed back to even after back-to-back bogeys on four and five but sunk her fifth birdie on eight - her 17th hole of the day - to finish at 1-under after making par on nine.
Junior Haley Stephens trails Vandermade by three strokes and is tied for sixth place at 2-over 74. Freshman Bertine Strauss carded a 5-over 77 in her collegiate debut and is tied with junior Katelyn Sepmoree in 16th place. Junior Madison Pressel is tied for 20th at 6-over 78.
While competing as an individual for the Longhorns, junior Desiree Dubreuil opened the season with an even-par 72 and is tied for fourth place. Senior Megan Rosenfeld shot an 11-over 83 to finish the day in 60th place.
As a team, Texas trails first-round leader Auburn (296) by three strokes.
The Longhorns will play alongside the Tigers and the Kentucky Wildcats (299, +11) in Monday's second round. The three teams will begin on Traditions' first tee in 10-minute increments beginning at 9:03 a.m. Central.
