AUSTIN, Texas - In their first-ever Big 12 meeting, TCU defeated No. 18/15 Texas, 20-13, Thursday evening at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Horned Frogs led the entire game, but had to hold off a late Texas rally.
Jeremy Hills' 8-yard touchdown run with 3:07 left in the game cut the deficit to 20-13. That score was followed by a three-and-out from the Texas defense.
The Longhorns, playing their final home game of the season, got the ball back at their own 34 with 1:44 on the clock. Case McCoy, who replaced starting quarterback David Ash twice in the game, ran 13 yards for a first down on the opening play, but was picked off by Sam Carter one play later and the Horned Frogs ran out the clock for their first win in Austin since 1967.
TCU (7-4, 4-4) took a 7-0 lead when Matthew Tucker plunged into the end zone from 2 yards out with 5:29 left in the first quarter. The Longhorns (8-3, 5-3) cut the TCU lead to 7-3 near the end of the first quarter when Nick Jordan connected on a 25-yard field goal.
The Horned Frogs increased their lead to 14-3 when Tucker scored from 1 yard out with 1:40 left in the first half after Ash fumbled inside the UT 20.
Texas cornerback Adrian Phillips picked off quarterback Trevone Boykin early in the third quarter and gave the Longhorns the ball at midfield. UT drove inside the TCU 10-yard line before Jordan booted a 25-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-6 with 8:52 left in the third quarter.
TCU drove deep into Texas territory on its next possession, but were forced to settle for a field goal. Jaden Oberkrom converted from 18 yards out to stake TCU to a 17-6 lead with 3:48 left in the third quarter. Oberkrom added a 41-yard field goal with 13:06 left in the game to push the TCU lead to 20-6.
Late in the fourth quarter McCoy led the Longhorns on a nine-play, 92-yard touchdown drive. McCoy, who was 11 of 17 for 110 yards, hit wide receiver Mike Davis for 15 yards before finding tight end M.J. McFarland for 13 more. McCoy connected with Jaxon Shipley for 19 yards to the TCU 43.
McCoy then hooked up with Davis for 14 yards to the TCU 20, and wide receiver Bryant Jackson hauled in a 12-yard reception before Hills barrelled in for the score.
Shipley had game highs in receptions (8) and receiving yards (80).
Texas posted 300 yards of offense and TCU had 299, including 217 on the ground. The Horned Frogs defense forced the Longhorns into a season-high four turnovers. Texas had just eight turnovers this season entering the game.
