AUSTIN, Texas - No. 8 Texas (11-3) claimed the doubles point and took all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over TCU (5-6) Sunday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Longhorns took two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and assume a 1-0 lead. Texas' Ben Chen and Daniel Whitehead broke TCU's Nick Chappell and Paul Chappell to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back on their way to an 8-2 win at second doubles.
UT's 35th-ranked tandem of Chris Camillone and David Holiner also broke for a 3-2 lead at No. 1 doubles against TCU's J.T. Sundling and Will Stein. Likewise, Camillone and Holiner raced out to a win, as they coasted to an 8-3 victory to nail down the doubles point. TCU claimed the remaining match at third doubles.
Chen picked up his second win in as many dual matches this season, as he dealt TCU's Stein a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at No. 5 singles to give Texas a 2-0 lead. Holiner made short work of the Frogs' Paul Chappell and posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Texas clinched the match at second singles, where the 79th-ranked Whitehead finished off TCU's Sundling, 6-3, 6-1.
UT's Lloyd Glasspool rallied from a one-set deficit at fourth singles to post a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) win over TCU's Daniel Sanchez to give Texas a 5-0 lead. Texas' Sudanwa Sitaram pushed his dual-match record to 11-1 with a 6-7 (7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) win over TCU's Facundo Lugones at third singles. Texas' Soren Hess-Olesen finished off the Longhorns' victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nick Chappell at first singles.
Texas, now in the top-25 for a 100th consecutive ITA team poll, resumes dual-match play on Thursday, March 8 when it takes on No. 25 San Diego. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Central at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The match will air live on Longhorn Network.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On the win: I think overall we had a really good day. It was a beautiful day to play tennis, and we had a nice crowd out here with around 400 people here. I saw some improvements in some areas that we have been working on in practice, and that is what we are looking for right now, to get better. We tried something different at No. 3 doubles, and I thought we could have been a little more aggressive there. But Nos. 1 and 2 doubles did a great job. I thought we carried that momentum over to the singles. A big win against a good team like TCU feels good.
On the team's energy throughout the match: I thought the energy was pretty good. Nos. 1 and 2 doubles allowed us to get on top, and we did not really let them back into the match. The team at No. 3 doubles was playing together for the first time, and they are still learning some things. I thought we needed to pick up our energy there, but that is part of the learning curve of this team.
