FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Senior Nicole Vandermade and junior Haley Stephens carded a pair of even-par 72s in Wednesday's second round at the NCAA Championship to guide the Texas Women's Golf team to a 7-over 295 score. Through 36 holes of championship action at Vanderbilt Legends Club, the Longhorns are in 12th place at 16-over 592 (297-295).
Vandermade played steady golf over her first eight holes before recording her first birdie on nine. Vandermade reached the green in two shots and had a look at eagle, but her putt came up four feet short and she sank it for birdie. Her second birdie came three holes later on 12 - one of the four par-3s at Legends. Vandermade made bogeys on 13 and 18 to finish at even and is tied for 42nd place at 4-over 148 (76-72).
Stephens' got off to a hot start with her first eagle of the year on the first hole where she holed out with an 8-iron from 142 yards. A subsequent bogey on three cost her a stroke, but she regained it on six with a birdie. Back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 pushed Stephens (76-72) to even. She is tied for 42nd with Vandermade through 36 holes.
Junior Katelyn Sepmoree followed up her team-best 71 in Tuesday's first round with a 4-over 76. She holds a one-stroke advantage over Vandermade and Stephens at 3-over 147 (71-76) for a 32nd place tie.
Freshman Bertine Strauss carded a second-round 76 and is tied for 64th at 6-over 150 in her NCAA Championship debut. Junior Desiree Dubreuil (81-75) is tied for 108th at 12-over 156 to round out the Texas squad.
Alabama tops the leaderboard again with a 5-under 571. The Tide will take an 11-stroke lead into the third round, as they lead a trio of teams tied for second at 6-over 582. UCLA, North Carolina and Virginia are the closest to Alabama at 6-over, followed by South Carolina and Arizona State at 7-over.
Alabama's Brooke Pancake leads all individuals at 6-under 138. Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro is in second at 4-under 140.
Texas 12th-place slot means they will tee off at 12:03 p.m. on the 10th tee along with 10th-place Vanderbilt and 11th-place Duke.
Post-round Comments
Texas Head Coach Martha Richards
On Texas' second round: I think we're all just a little frustrated because we felt like we left some shots out there. The course was prime for the taking, so to speak, at 7:30 in the morning. Overall, we're playing some great golf, but we have to clean up our par-5s a little bit. Those are holes you have to take advantage of out here.
On senior Nicole Vandermade's second round: She really played well and had some other good birdie looks that burned the edges. I think we'll see her play better and better as the week goes on.
