SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Texas Men's Golf freshman Jordan Spieth has replaced Brandt Snedeker in the U.S. Open field, the United States Golf Association announced Monday evening.
The PGA Tour John Deere Classic (July 12-15) also confirmed Monday that Spieth has earned a sponsor exemption into its field. Including the upcoming AT&T National (June 28 - July 1), Spieth has earned exemptions into four PGA Tour events this year.
A two-time U.S. Junior Amateur champion, Spieth was the first alternate for this week's championship. He just missed earning a spot in the 156-player field after falling in a playoff at the 36-hole Houston sectional qualifier last Monday, the day after Texas clinched its third NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club.
This week's start marks the freshman All-American's first in a major championship. In five previous PGA Tour starts, Spieth made the cut three times, including a tie for 41st place at the 2012 Texas Valero Open.
Spieth will play with Bill Haas and Nick Watney at 3:14 p.m. Central off the ninth tee on Thursday.
Texas Ex Bob Estes will also be competing this week on the West Coast. He is scheduled to play with Robert Karlsson and Robert Rock at 10:17 a.m. Thursday also off the ninth tee.
The 112th U.S. Open will be contested at The Olympic Club in San Francisco beginning Thursday, June 14. First and second-round television coverage will be on ESPN, while NBC will broadcast the weekend rounds.
