WACO, Texas--Junior setter Hannah Allison tied a career high with five kills while adding 30 assists Tuesday as the No. 9 Texas Longhorns earned a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) against the Baylor Bears in Big 12 action. Texas (10-3, 3-0) opens conference play with a 3-0 mark for the fourth time under head coach Jerritt Elliott (2001, 2004 and 2009).
Haley Eckerman led all players with 14 kills, adding five digs and two blocks. Bailey Webster chipped in 11 kills while hitting .400 (11-3-20) with three blocks. Sarah Palmer had 17 digs for the Longhorns.
Zoe Adom led Baylor (13-4, 0-2) with eight kills. Texas held Baylor to a .050 hitting percentage in the match, recording 10 blocks on the evening.
Baylor opened the first set with a 6-2 run, but Texas answered and used two straight Bear errors to take the 9-8 lead. Sarah Palmer's ace made it a three-point lead at 13-10 with Webster later putting two down for the 15-12 score at the media timeout. Eckerman figured for three more kills as the Longhorns led by seven, 19-12. Jones helped Baylor with a 5-1 run late, chopping the deficit to 23-18, but it would be Webster who would finish the set off for the Longhorns with a kill.
The host Bears again took the early lead in the second set, but a 6-1 streak would put Texas back on top, 8-7. Eckerman had the one-on-one solo block on the left side to make it an 11-7 advantage. Webster made it 18-12 as Eckerman would close it out as the Longhorns took the 2-0 lead in the match.
Seven straight points helped Texas build a 10-7 lead in the third set, but the Bears got within one at 13-12. Madelyn Hutson and McNeal teamed on a block to make it 21-15 for UT. Baylor used two straight blocks to get the set to 24-22, but a hitting error finished the sweep for the Longhorns.
Texas travels to Texas Tech this Saturday (Sept. 29) for a 2 p.m. match. Gametracker live stats will be available on TexasSports.com and live Twitter updates @TexasVolleyball.
