Abby Smith ties season-high seven saves as the Longhorns record highest finish in the Big 12 since 2007.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Soccer fell 1-0 to No. 12 Texas Tech in its regular-season finale on Friday night at John Walker Soccer Complex.
The Longhorns (12-5-2, 5-2-1 Big 12 Conference) finish third in the Big 12 team standings, the highest for a Texas team since 2007, and earn the No. 3 seed for next week's conference tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
The Red Raiders got on the board early off a third-minute goal from Janine Beckie. Beckie received a long pass out of the midfield that got past UT keeper Abby Smith at the top of the 18-yard box and put the shot in unobstructed. Following the goal, the Longhorns' defense did a solid job of clearing the ball from the box under pressure from the Red Raiders' offense. Smith also made a pair of clutch diving saves in the 16th and 20th minutes to keep the score at 1-0.
The Longhorns got off four first-half shots, putting two of them on goal. The first came from Chantale Campbell in the 17th minute from 25 yards out in line with the right post. The second came early in the 32nd minute when Sharis Lachappelle received the ball on the right side of the box and sent a shot toward the Texas Tech goal off the bounce in traffic.
UT came out aggressively in the second half tallying four corner kicks in the first six minute, including three in a row in the 48th minute from Sharis Lachappelle. The third found the head of Lindsey Meyer inside the box but the shot went wide left. Three minutes later, Lachappelle found space on the left side and unleashed a left-footed shot toward the goal but it was blocked. In the 69th minute, Jasmine Hart got a shot off just outside the box but it sailed wide left. Gabby Zarnegar accounted for UT's final shot of the game that she took in traffic inside the box but it went high.
Smith tallied a season-high seven saves in goal for the second straight match.
The Longhorns will take on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The match will be the second of the four and is slated for 2 p.m. Central at Swope Soccer Village.
