TEXAS EARNS NO. 3 SEED FOR BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP ...
Texas makes its 18th appearance at the Big 12 tournament this week. The Longhorns have won two Big 12 Conference Championship titles (2006, 2007) and have reached the semifinals in three of the last four seasons.
TEXAS IN THE BIG 12 …
After being selected to finish sixth in the 2013 Big 12 preseason poll, Texas placed third in the regular-season league standings. In conference play this season, the Longhorns crack the top three in several statistical categories, including ranking second in points (34), goals (11), assists (12) and corners (56) and are tied for second in goals allowed (six). They also ranked third in goals against average (0.73) and are tied for third in shutouts (eight).
WINNING WAYS …
With its 2-0 win over Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Oct. 25, Texas earned its 12th victory of the season, the most wins in a season for a Longhorn squad since 2008 (13). The Longhorns' five conference wins were also the most since 2008.
THE LONGHORNS AGAINST THE COWGIRLS AT THE BIG 12 TOURNAMENT …
Wednesday's game will mark the fourth meeting between the Longhorns and the Cowgirls at the Big 12 Championship. Texas carries a record of 1-2-1, last encountering Oklahoma State in the 2011 semifinals. The Longhorns' last topped the Cowgirls in the 2007 semifinals when UT advanced 5-3 on penalty kicks after playing OSU to a 1-1 draw through two overtime periods.
UP NEXT …
The winner of Wednesday's match will play the winner of No. 2 Texas Tech and No. 7 TCU (Wednesday, 8 p.m.) on Friday at 8 p.m. The winner of that semifinal will advance to the championship match on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
