NR/No. 24 Baseball holds off UT Arlington, 2-1

AUSTIN, Texas - Junior second baseman Erich Weiss hit a two-run, bases-loaded single in the third to provide the NR/No. 24 Texas Longhorns with the 2-1 non-conference win over the UT Arlington Mavericks at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas freshman Chad Hollingsworth went five innings in his first collegiate start, allowing only one run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Texas (3-1) bullpen accounted for four scoreless innings, including closer Corey Knebel, who threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. Chad Nack (1-1) took the loss for UT Arlington (3-1) after giving up two runs and four hits in three innings.
Hollingsworth gave up a four-pitch walk to start the game with a base hit and throwing error loading the bases with one out. After striking out Matt Shortall, Hollingsworth got Jake Pinchback to fly out to left to get out of the jam.
Codey McElroy made a run-saving catch at first base on J.M. Twitchell's line drive with a runner at third to end the Mavericks' half of the third and led off the UT third with a double to left. After Matt Moynihan singled him to third, Taylor Stell was hit by a Nack pitch to load the bases. Weiss then laced the two-run single to left field for the 2-0 lead. Shortall tripled in the top of the fourth and scored on Pinchback's RBI groundout for the lone UTA run.
Knebel would close the door in the ninth with back-to-back strikeouts with the tying run at second for the Mavericks.

On his team's two one-run wins so far this season: I'm pretty happy about the three things we stress the most for all teams: consistency with their attitude, work ethic and commitment to the team. The dugout is playing as big a role as the players on the field. There is a great spirit about the team at this point. As long as we keep moving forward the way we are with these three things, it will go from trust to respect and respect to total confidence. As they get more playing time, we'll see more consistency. The at-bats were a lot better than the number of hits. There were six balls that were hit on a line right at people. That happens sometimes. That's the way this game is. The truth of the matter is that we hit the ball really well and played hard. The thing I liked, too, is that they didn't take the frustrations that come from playing offense that way--where they hit the ball and the defense catches it and we don't get rewarded--and pout on defense. They played hard and made good plays. They got good jumps. For young players, that's a hard thing to do and it goes unrecognized, but they are doing those kinds of little things and it speaks well for their spirit.
On junior pitcher/infielder Ty Marlow coming through in tough situations: That's what he needs to do for this team. He's got the makeup for that. He's got the stuff for it because in exciting situations the hitters are excited and he can throw his slider and his off-speed changeup for strikes. He inspires all of us by the fact that he's not some giant physical specimen and he walks out there and you'd think he's a bulldog.
On junior pitcher Corey Knebel: He's going to be fine. He is a completely different person now in his mind because of the things that have been said about him and all of the expectation. He's never dealt with that before. He's got the right personality to (deal with the expectations.) He'll figure it out. Each time he's walked out there he's been more consistent.
Freshman pitcher Chad Hollingsworth On how he felt pitching his first start today: I felt pretty comfortable. Our defense is going to come out there and work every day and our defense really played for us today. I got in some jams that I really couldn't control, but our defense picked it up and got me out of them.
On which pitches were working best for him today: My changeup was working and I really didn't throw my curveball too much. My changeup was working all night and he kept calling it over and over and luckily, it kept working.
On whether he had any nerves starting today: I've always been a pretty level-headed guy, so I don't really get nervous. It was exciting and I was pretty anxious to get out there, finally, on my own.
Junior infielder Erich Weiss On getting a few big hits early in the game: It was awesome. To be able to help your team like that is something that you really cherish.
On whether his team faced any pitching changes later in the game when they weren't hitting as well: A little bit. Their pitchers were pretty good. They have a really good team and you have to give them credit for pitching the way they did. We squared-up a lot of balls that went right to defenders. We got past that and we played defense.
