PALO ALTO, Calif. - Mark Appel struck out 14 in a complete-game three-hitter Friday as the No. 15/6 Stanford Cardinal shut out the NR/No. 22 Texas Longhorns, 2-0, in the first game of a non-conference series at Sunken Diamond.
Appel did not allow a hit until two outs in the sixth inning, an infield single by Texas designated hitter Matt Moynihan. The Stanford righty struck out the side twice as the Cardinal improved to 7-3 on the season.
Parker French was saddled with the loss for Texas (6-3), giving up two runs (both in the first inning) on six hits in seven innings with a walk and three strikeouts. After allowing two runs in the first, French settled down by retiring 12 straight batters until a walk in the fifth.
Jonny Locher hit the first pitch by French down the third base line for a leadoff double. Danny Diekroeger then hit a chopper up the middle to score a run as Weston Hall overran the ball, allowing Diekroeger to advance to third. French then threw a wild pitch as Stanford took a 2-0 lead in the first for the only scoring of the game.
Moynihan recorded his second hit of the game with a leadoff single in the ninth, but Appel struck out pinch-hitter Collin Shaw and induced a game-ending double play from Erich Weiss.
The series continues tomorrow and Sunday with a 3 p.m. Central Time start for both games, which will be carried live on AM 1300 The Zone. Gametracker live stats will be be available on TexasSports.com with live Twitter updates @Texas_Baseball.

Post-Game Quotes
Texas head coach Augie Garrido
On team battling against Stanford's Mark Appel tonight: It was a 2-0 ballgame and our players played hard tonight. They never gave away their identity or gave up. The kind of hits that Stanford got is what has been happening to us in recent games. That's one of the mysterious things about baseball. What I am most proud of is that our team faced a major league pitcher tonight. (Mark Appel) threw like Taylor Jungmann did on his best day. Everything was working for him tonight and our team never gave in. We took a giant step forward of staying within themselves.
Sophomore pitcher Parker French
On his performance against Stanford: I think we said before that our job is to pitch to the mitt. I knew I had to give my team an opportunity to win the game. I made some good pitches in the first and ran into some tough luck, but I just knew if I stayed with that, things would turn around. (Mark Appel) was just on his game tonight, that's a major league pitcher right there.
On positive things to take away from tonight's game: I think I think we belonged on the field with (Mark Appel) tonight. Last year, I don't know if we could have said that. We were ready for this moment. Things didn't go our way, but they are going to turn around for us and we belong with the best teams in the nation.
