PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 15/6 Stanford Cardinal used a 13-hit attack to win its second straight of the series with the 7-2 decision over the NR/No. 22 Texas Longhorns at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal defense used a rare triple play in the Texas half of the first to gain momentum.
Daniel Starwalt (2-0) earned the win with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Sam Lindquist earned his second save with 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Texas (6-4) was in danger of being shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2004 season until Erich Weiss hit a two-run single with two outs in the ninth.
The Longhorns stranded 11 runners on base as Dillon Peters (1-1) took the loss with five innings for his start. He allowed two runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Weston Hall finished with a 3-for-3 day, all singles, for Texas.
After being shut out 2-0 last night, the Longhorns looked for their first lead of the weekend by loading the bases with no outs in the first. With a 2-2 count, Mark Payton lined a shot to second baseman Danny Diekroeger, who started the 4-6-3 triple play to get the Cardinal out of the inning.
Wayne Taylor hit an 0-2 pitch to right to score Stanford's first run in the fourth. Diekroeger then led off the Cardinal fifth with a solo homer to right with Stanford pushing another run across in the sixth for a 3-0 lead. Stanford broke the game open with four runs in the seventh as the Longhorns used four pitchers in the inning.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 3 p.m. Central Time start, which will be carried live on AM 1300 The Zone. Gametracker live stats will be be available on TexasSports.com with live Twitter updates @Texas_Baseball.
