Baseball snaps four-game losing streak with 6-1 win over UTPA

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore second baseman Brooks Marlow hit a two-run homer, the team's first of the season, as the Texas Longhorns defeated the UTPA Broncs, 6-1, in non-conference action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (7-5) played errorless ball in snapping a four-game losing streak.
UT freshman pitcher Chad Hollingsworth earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing only one run on six hits with a walk and one strikeout.
Texas was first to get on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by junior third baseman Erich Weiss to bring in junior center fielder Weston Hall. Weiss followed with a two-run double in the second inning as Texas took the 3-0 lead.
Weiss hit 2-for-4 with three runs and was credited with three RBI.
The Broncs (2-7) scored their lone run in the fourth when Chris Torres hit an RBI fielder's choice as Will Klausing scored from third.
The Longhorns added three unearned runs in the eighth, capped by Marlow's two-run round-tripper to right.
Sam Street took the loss for the Broncs (2-1), allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings.
Travis Duke, Ty Marlow and Corey Knebel combined to throw four scoreless innings in relief for the Longhorns.
Texas hosts UC Santa Barbara in a three-game series, starting this Friday (March 8) at 7 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Notes: Brooks Marlow hit the Longhorns' first homer of the season and his first home run since his first collegiate game, 57 games ago, when he opened the 2012 season with a two-homer game...Texas has not lost back-to-back midweek games since the 2006 season...Texas pitchers have a 2.33 ERA this season at UFCU Disch-Falk Field with opponents batting only .234 against them.

On his team's explosive offense today: It's as many runs as we scored last week. If we're looking for improvement, we got it.
On UTPA's pitcher's performance: We really did come out and play well in the first three innings. We saw the ball well. We took our walks. We took our balls. We hit the ball hard. We played well on offense. We hustled. The first three innings were very encouraging. But, we flattened out in the middle, which has been typical for us. Then, we played well in the ninth. This has been a pattern for us. We're just going to have to try to build on being more consistent and playing every inning, but we're not there yet. Moving back to after the last Stanford game, I think that that was hard to do because the day before was difficult. We experienced a lot of things. We'll have a long meeting tomorrow because, in my mind, what we experienced at Stanford in our first road trip against a very good veteran team on a very fast grass field brought a lot of things out for us. It really tested our ability to stay focused and play within ourselves. In the second game on Saturday, we came apart. When that happens, they experience some of the things we've been talking about. Now they know why we were talking about it. That's what I hope for. We will be a lot better, if we make the adjustments that we can make as a result of those experiences. That's why I'm extremely optimistic about this team. I think we have the attitude and commitment from the players. They are excited about that.

On where his homerun power comes from: I would say it comes from my dad and all the hitting coaches that I've had. It comes from all the things that we've worked on. It's mostly about letting the bat do the work. I got a good piece of the bat and squared the ball up pretty well.
On whether it was rewarding to finally keep one fair for a homerun after hitting several foul this season: The one thing I need to do is keep my hands inside the ball. Those ones that kept getting foul were from not getting around it. It was exciting to finally keep one fair.
On whether his catch in foul territory the inning before gave him confidence to hit a homerun: Yes. It greased it up a little bit and got my energy back up. I think it got everybody's energy back up. I think that's just the way the game goes.

On whether this win helps his team after getting swept at Stanford: Yes. We fought throughout every game in that series and it was just a heartbreaking series for us. The only thing to do is to look forward now. That's what we did tonight.
On whether UTPA made any changes in their pitching that explains Texas' offensive lull in the middle innings: (Street) had some good movement on his pitches. He located them well. We did get out to a hot start in the first couple of innings, but the middle innings we can work on acting like those innings are the last three innings, also. That will help us take better at-bats. It's just something to learn from.
