IRVING, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced Texas as the recipient of five postseason men's swimming and diving awards Friday evening.
UT senior Michael McBroom was selected as the Men's Swimmer of the Year while redshirt sophomore diver Will Chandler was named the Men's Diver of the Year.
Freshman diver Cory Bowersox was tabbed as the Men's Swimming and Diving Newcomer of the Year, and his coach, Matt Scoggin, was selected as the Men's Diving Coach of the Year for the eighth time. Head coach Eddie Reese garnered his 11th selection as the league's Men's Swimming Coach of the Year.
McBroom posted Texas' top individual finishes at last month's NCAA Championships where he finished as the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle. McBroom also earned All-America honors on UT's 800-yard freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships. He finishes his Texas career as the school record holder in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the NCAA record holder in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Chandler placed fifth in the platform event at the NCAA Championships. The Waco native placed second on all three boards at the NCAA Zone "D" Diving Meet last month in Houston. Chandler won the platform diving title and took second in the three-meter event at the Big 12 Championships. Chandler completed a remarkable return to competitive diving after sitting out the 2011-12 season due to the effects of Crohn's Disease, which resulted in the removal of two yards of his colon.
Bowersox earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the one-meter diving event at the NCAA Championships. The Fairfax, Va., native was selected as the Big 12 Championships' Men's Diver of the Meet after winning the one-meter and three-meter events.
Reese, Scoggin and UT assistant coach Kris Kubik led the Horns to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and secured Texas' 34th consecutive conference title.
