LAWRENCE, Kansas - Sophomore left-hander Dillon Peters allowed one run on six hits in a complete-game effort Saturday as the Texas Longhorns evened its Big 12 series with the 2-1 win over the Kansas Jayhawks at Hoglund Ballpark. The Longhorns provided a run in the second and third innings for the team's 15th one-run game of the season.
Mark Payton led off the second with a walk, moving to second on C.J Hinojosa's sacrifice for Texas (19-14, 4-7). Jacob Felts then singled to left as Payton scored the first run. With the bases loaded in the third, Payton drilled a fly ball to center as Brooks Marlow scored to make it a 2-0 Texas lead.
Peters got some key defensive plays behind him to keep Kansas (21-13, 6-5) from coming back. First baseman Ty Marlow made a solid catch at the fence on a foul ball in the sixth and two batters later, Weston Hall made a diving grab in center field for the third out. Tucker Tharp, who provided the walk-off in Friday's 7-6, 12-inning win for Kansas, hit an RBI double for the Jayhawks' lone run in the seventh.
Michael Suiter represented the tying run in the eighth after a single, but Peters induced the 5-4-3 double play to end the Kansas half of the inning. Connor McKay hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, but Ka'iana Eldredge grounded to short as Hinojosa flipped the ball to second to end the game.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AM 1300 The Zone. Gametracker live stats will be available on TexasSports.com with live Twitter updates @Texas_Baseball.
