AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Cody Gribble chipped in a timely eagle on the 14th hole and followed with a birdie to lead the No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team to its third straight Morris Williams Intercollegiate title Sunday afternoon at The University of Texas Golf Club. Gribble (72-67-71) led the Longhorns with a fifth-place finish at 3-under-par 210.
Texas' win marked its fourth of the season and second consecutive after winning the Augusta State Invitational last weekend.
Playing in the lead group, Gribble struggled early in his round with three bogeys on the front nine. A fourth bogey ensued immediately after the turn before he sank his first birdie on the par-5 No. 11. After a pair of pars, Gribble chipped in from eight paces off the 14th green for his second eagle in as many rounds, and he birdied the next hole to drop to even par where he remained for the remainder of the day.
Over the 54-hole tourney, Gribble played the back nine of UTGC at -8, including a 6-under under performance in Saturday's second round.
One week after recording a then career best tie for 13th place at Augusta State, sophomore Kramer Hickok celebrated his 21st birthday with a seventh-place finish on his home course. Hickok (73-67-72) trailed Gribble by two strokes, and his 1-under 212 marked the best raw score of his Longhorn career.
Freshman Brandon Stone (73-73-71) also carded a level-par scorecard Sunday afternoon with four birdies and four bogeys. He finished tied for 19th place at 4-over 217 alongside senior Julio Vegas (71-74-72) and junior Toni Hakula (78-66-73).
Texas returns to action April 22-24 at the Big 12 Championship in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Post-tournament Quotes
Texas Head Coach John Fields
On winning the Morris Williams Intercollegiate: I am really happy for our guys. Winning this golf tournament for our fourth victory this year is really outstanding. I am pleased for them because there were different times during this tournament that were slow or tough for us but they overcame it, they persevered, they played really well when it came out down the stretch and they got the victory.
On any extra pressure to win with it being Texas' home course: When you play at home, you have a tendency to put a lot of pressure on yourself and that just simply is golf because we only play here one time here during the year and the obviously want to play their best. It's not like we play every week here. We have to try to diffuse that as much as we can. I thought the guys did a good job at playing one shot at a time going around a golf course they know but you still have to be focus, work hard and that is what they did.
Senior Cody Gribble
On feelings about team win: It's an awesome feeling. To win the last three years in a row is incredible. Our team is very strong and just followed through again.
On the importance of the win: It is a huge win going into the Big 12 tournament and the postseason. We still got some work to do. We played great, we finished strong, and we got the victory but we still got some things we got to work on to be prepared for Big 12's and Regionals and Nationals.
On winning Morris Williams his last year: It is awesome. To win with these guys and this team, I am really fortunate to have teammates like this. For the last three years (Morris Williams Intercollegiate) has been an incredible experience and something I will never forget.
