AUSTIN, Texas - Junior first baseman Ty Marlow went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Texas Longhorns defeated the Texas State Bobcats, 12-5, in a non-conference game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Texas (18-13) recorded a season-high 16 hits while turning five double plays.
Marlow's homer marked the second time this season a Longhorn player hit a homerun for his first collegiate hit. Freshman shortstop C.J Hinojosa went 3-for-4, adding another three RBI to tie his season best while Mark Payton was 4-for-4 with two RBI.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Travis Duke (2-0) registered the win for UT. Duke threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up one unearned run and one hit with one strikeout.
Lucas Humpal (2-1) took the loss for Texas State (12-20). Andrew Stumph, who went 2-for-4, led the Bobcats with two RBI. Morgan Mickan and Garrett Mattlage recorded two hits and one RBI apiece.
The Bobcats got their offense off to an early start. In the top of the first, with two outs and two on base, Stumph hit a single up the left side and batted in Mattlage, who was hit by a pitch to get on base. The Longhorns answered in the bottom of the first. Payton's stand-up double deep into right field allowed Erich Weiss to score the first UT run of the day. The next batter, Hinojosa, hit a single to right field and batted in Payton.
Texas kept the momentum going with two runs in the second. Ty Marlow registered a solo to left field. Next, Ben Johnson reached on a double up the left line. He was batted in by Weston Hall, who connected on a single up the middle for the 4-1 Longhorns advantage.
Starting pitcher Josh Urban found himself in a jam in the third. Mickan reached on a single and stole second. Mattlage walked to first and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Cody Lovejoy's groundout brought home Mickan. With two outs in the top of the second, Duke took over the mound and promptly earned a strikeout.
It was Ty Marlow who got things going again for the Texas offense in the third. With a runner on first and third, his single to right field brought Payton home.
The Horns kept it rolling in the fourth, recording another four runs with Jeremy Hallonquist pitching. Payton's single to right center earned him one additional RBI and moved Weiss, who reached base on a fielding error, to third. Hinojosa's single allowed Weiss to score and Mark Gottsacker's walk loaded the bases. Jeremy Montalbano's single through the left side added two more runs for Texas for the commanding 9-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Mattlage's double scored Texas State's third run, but Hinojosa's single to left center added another run for UT in the bottom of the fifth.
With Chad Hollingsworth on the mound, the Texas State offense would tack on one more run in the eighth. Mattlage tripled to right center and scored on a Stumph single through the left side. The Longhorns answered with two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with the Bobcats completing the scoring with a run in the ninth on Micken's RBI triple.

Post-Game Quotes
Texas head coach Augie Garrido
On how big was today with hits: It is a step forward. It is a step in confidence building and it reveals the capabilities of the players and the talents of the players, but it has got to come from a mentality that is filled with confidence and in this game you have to constantly rebuild your confidence because it is a game of failure. The offensive players did a great job of that tonight.
On how much fun is it to be a coach in a dugout for a game like this: It is rewarding because the rewards that come from winning are that you can create an environment in which you can teach a lot easier. When you are losing and every game is difficult and every game is by one run and every single mistake--if we didn't have the runs, we made enough mistakes that if we lost the game we would be talking about all the mistakes we made. So this is what it looks like when you rescue yourself so to speak from whatever mistakes you make or whatever you give to the other team. This is what it looks like--you stand here and you talk about things you did well in the offense.
Junior first baseman Ty Marlow
On finally getting the bats going tonight: Yes, we did. We have been working on it all year and it finally came through. We had a bunch of tough hits against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and they finally sailed today.
On feelings to get a home run: I mean it's good. If felt good off the bat. I was looking fast ball and he didn't throw me a curve ball so that was good. I am more worried about me and Brooks Marlow with the communication on the errors that we had tonight. Other than that, it felt great.
Junior outfielder Mark Payton
On tonight's game: We went out there with some confidence today and we really just played with the intensity of a 12-year-old. That was our goal today. 12-year-olds go out there and have fun and that is how we played.
