AUBURN, Ala. -- The Texas Women's Golf team maintained its fifth-place position at the NCAA East Regional Championship after carding a 3-over-par 291 in Friday's second round at Auburn University Club. Senior Madison Pressel carded the Longhorns' low second round of 71 to move into a tie for seventh place at 3-under 141.
Texas' 580 (289-291) marks its second-lowest 36-hole score of the season, five strokes off its 585 (286-289) at the PING/ASU Invitational.
The No. 8-seed Longhorns enter Saturday's final round six shots ahead of the team cut line to advance to the NCAA Championship. North Carolina (290-292=582, +6) and host Auburn (29-284=583) are in sixth and seventh places, respectively, while UCLA (288-298=586) and Tennessee (294-292=586) are tied for eighth.
The top-eight team finishers and top-two individuals not playing on the eight qualifying teams at each of the three regional qualifiers will earn bids to compete at the 2013 NCAA Women's Golf Championship from May 21-24 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga., hosted by Georgia.
Beginning the day on the 10th hole, Pressel found back-to-back birdies on her opening holes and remained at 2-under before sinking her third subpar on the 165-yard, par-3 at No. 17. She briefly took command of the individual leaderboard at -6 with a fourth birdie on the first hole - her 28th of the event - but gave up two shots with a double bogey on No. 5. Pressel's fifth birdie came on the next hole, but she signed for a 1-under 71 after a second double bogey occurred at the conclusion of her round on No. 9.
Senior Katelyn Sepmoree (74-72) took advantage of 'moving day' and climbed 13 places with an even-par second round. Sepmoree's scorecard included three birdies, one bogey and one double. She began the day tied for 44th place, but is now tied for 31st at 2-over 146 alongside Texas senior Desiree Dubreuil (69-77).
Timely birdies on Nos. 7 and 9 sent sophomore Bertine Strauss (77-73) into the clubhouse at 6-over 150 and tied for 56th place, while senior Haley Stephens (76-75=151, +7) finished the day tied for 64th. The Tide's Stephanie Meadow (68-66=134) leads all players by four strokes.
Alabama (277-277=554) holds a 14-stroke lead over Tulane (283-285=568) on the team leaderboard. Arkansas (283-294) and Oklahoma State (290-287=577) are tied for third.
Because of impending weather tomorrow, Saturday's final round tee times will begin at 7 a.m. Central with 10-minute intervals. Texas is slated to begin at 8 a.m. on the 10th tee alongside North Carolina and Oklahoma State.
