AUBURN, Ala. -- Led by a pair of even-par final rounds by seniors Katelyn Sepmoree and Haley Stephens, the eighth-seeded Texas Women's Golf team turned in a 3-over 291 on Saturday to secure a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championship and punch its ticket to the NCAA Championship for the fifth time in the last six years.
The Longhorns (289-291-291=871, +7) earned one of the eight available regional berths to the 2013 NCAA Women's Golf Championship by way of their top-eight finish at Auburn University Club. This year's championship is slated for May 21-24 at UGA Golf Course in Athens, Ga., hosted by Georgia.
Senior Madison Pressel carded her first under-par tournament of the season at 2-under 214 (70-71-73) to lead Texas on the individual leaderboard. Her 11th place finish marks a career-best in three regional championship appearances.
Sepmoree signed for back-to-back 72s on Friday and Saturday to finish tied for 26th overall at 218 (74-72-72). Her final-round scorecard was balanced with three bogeys and as many birdies.
Senior Desiree Dubreuil (69-77-74=220) finished two strokes behind Sepmoree for 33rd place. Despite four bogeys, Dubreuil shaved two strokes off her scorecard with an eagle on the 366-yard, par-4 No. 6.
Senior Haley Stephens (76-75-72=223) and sophomore Bertine Strauss (77-73-74=224) rounded out the Texas squad in ties for 44th and 51st, respectively.
Alabama (277-277-290=844, -20) led wire-to-wire and finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up Tulane (283-285-284). Arkansas (283-294-287=864) and Oklahoma State (290-287-287) finished tied for third. Northwestern (292-298-284=874), UCLA (288-298-289=875) and host Auburn (299-284-294=877) round out the eight advancing teams for the regional.
