MILTON, Ga. -- The Texas Men's Golf team maintained its third-place position in Thursday's final round of stroke play at the NCAA Championship and moves on to the match play portion beginning Friday at Capital City Club Crabapple Course. The fourth-seeded Longhorns will begin their 2012 NCAA title defense by playing the No. 5 Fighting Illini in a quarterfinal contest beginning at 9:45 a.m. Central.
Texas finished tied for third place on the team leaderboard at 7-under 833 with Alabama, but the Crimson Tide won the tiebreaker for the higher seed based on the cumulative total of non-counting individual scores.
Freshman Brandon Stone (68-68-68) led Texas on the individual leaderboard with a tie for second place at 6-under 204. Stone's finish marks the best by a Longhorn at the NCAA Championship under head coach John Fields. Stone joins Jason Hartwick (T-8, 2004), Matthew Rosenfeld (T-3, 2003) and David Gossett (T-3, 2000) as Fields' top-10 products during his 16 years at the helm of the Texas program.
Senior Julio Vegas (68-68-74) tied for 32nd place at even-par 210, while sophomore Kramer Hickok (72-66-73=211) and junior Toni Hakula (71-69-72=212) tied for 38th and 49th, respectively. Senior Cody Gribble (75-70-70=215) rounded out the Texas squad tied for 85th place.
No. 1-seed California (277-272-275=824, -16) will face eighth-seeded Arizona State in Friday's first quarterfinal match at 9 a.m. No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 7 UNLV are set to being at 10:30 a.m., and No. 3 Alabama and No. 6 New Mexico will play in the fourth and final match at 11:15 a.m.
New Mexico, UNLV, Arizona State and Texas A&M all tied for sixth (842, +2), and a four-for-three tiebreaker ensued to determine the match play field. Texas A&M was eliminated in the tiebreaker procedure.
NCAA.com will provide live web streaming of select holes from 12:15-4 p.m. Central Friday.
