The 2012 Olympic silver medalist hopes to qualify for IAAF World Championships; Moss finishes ninth, Murphy 12th in the decathlon
DES MOINES, Iowa - Former Longhorn Leo Manzano is in line to make another appearance on the international stage.
Manzano finished second in the finals of the 1,500 meters during Saturday's action at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University. The two-time Olympian clocked a time of 3 minutes, 45.35 seconds.
As he did to capture the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, Manzano used a strong kick down the stretch to take second. He was edged by Matthew Centrowitz Jr., who clocked a time of 3:45.17. Lopez Lomong was third in 3:45.69.
Manzano now must reeach the World Championships 'A' standard of 3:35 to advance to August's IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
It would be Manzano's sixth appearance on the U.S. team, including fourth at the World Championships.
Manzano could join Trey Hardee who has already qualified for the event as the two-time defending champion in the decathlon.
However, Hardee did participate in the seven of the 10 events over the last two days at the USA Outdoor meet, including three on Saturday.
The 2012 Olympic silver medalist was second in the pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches (5.00m) and fifth in the javelin with a toss of 196-0 (59.75m), but did have three fouls in the discus.
Since he did not compete in every event, his total did not count in the standings.
Isaac Murphy, who just completed his eligibility at Texas, finished 12th in the decathlon with a total of 7,214.
Miller Moss, a volunteer assistant on the UT staff and an All-American at Clemson, ended up ninth (7,490).
Ashton Eaton, who won the gold medal at last summer's Olympics, won with a total of 8,291.
The four-day meet concludes Sunday. Ryan Crouser, Hayden Baillio and Jacob Thormaehlen will participate in Sunday's shot put.
