Cross Country opens season at Baylor Bear Twilight Invitational

Longhorn men place second in the team standings with three runners finishing in the top 10; Texas women finish third.

WACO, Texas - The Texas Cross Country teams kicked off the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, in Waco at the Baylor Bear Twilight Invitational. The men's team placed second overall in its 6,000-meter race with 48 points and had three runners finish in the top 10, while the women came in third in the 4,000m race with 84 team points.
On the men's side senior Will Nation finished second out of 65 total runners in the race with a time of 18 minutes, 24.6 seconds, just four seconds out of first place, to lead Texas. Fellow senior Austin Roth landed in the fifth-place spot with a time of 18:53.6, while sophomore Nate Moore was eighth overall at 19:02.8.
Also running for Texas on Friday were senior Collin Smith, who finished 17th for in a time of 19:23.7, and junior Blake Williams, who crossed shortly behind him in the 20th spot with a time of 19:27.2.
For the women, freshman Rachel St. Martin was the Longhorns' top finisher, crossing 16th in 14:28.8. Sophomore Katie Burford (18th), junior Marissa Lee (19th) and sophomore Kaleigh Ervin (20th) were close behind with times of 14:36.3, 14.39.4 and 14:39.5, respectively. Redshirt freshman Hannah Novelli rounded out UT's scoring in 22nd with a time of 14:46.3.
Junior Alaina Perez (32nd, 15:02.7), junior Marissa Pekarek (45th, 15:14.3), sophomore Rachel Harper (53rd, 15:24.9) and sophomore Kathleen Killeen (65th, 15:41.9) also raced on Friday.
The Longhorns were one of seven squads racing at Friday's meet, along with host Baylor, Houston, North Texas, TCU, Texas A&M and the SMU women. North Texas got the team victory, finishing with 37 points.
Texas Cross Country will next compete on Sept. 20 in San Antonio at the Ricardo Romo Classic.
