Players from both teams spent time playing games and helping the kids both hit and run bases.
AUSTIN, Texas -- On Sat., Sept. 20, members of both the Texas Baseball and Softball teams took the initiative to volunteer their time by helping out at The Miracle League of San Antonio.
The Miracle League of San Antonio is a charitable organization that provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball/softball as a team member in an organized league. The Miracle League gives these children the opportunity to get out in the sunshine and enjoy playing the game of baseball/softball in its purest form on a specially equipped field called the Mays Family Field of Dreams. The custom-designed venue incorporates a cushioned synthetic turf that accommodates wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices, while helping prevent injuries. It provides a level-playing field where physically and mentally challenged children can hit, run, and catch -- just like the best of them.
The squads spent from 9 a.m.-noon interacting with the kids, playing games and helping them with hitting and running the bases.
During each Miracle League game, every child is given an opportunity to hit the ball and score a run. Team members are assigned "buddies" who assist them in hitting the ball and "running" the bases. Buddies can be fellow schoolmates, parents, college students, business leaders or anyone who wishes to volunteer their time.
