FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Ninth-ranked Texas Men's Tennis defeated Arkansas, 5-2, on Sunday at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center to open the season with two consecutive road victories.
Texas (2-0) claimed the doubles point by cruising to a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position (John Mee/Nick Naumann), and a 6-0 shutout at the No. 1 position (Adrien Berkowicz/Søren Hess-Olesen).
Freshman Adrian Ortiz-Ruiz gave UT an early 2-0 lead by picking up his first career dual-match singles victory over Arkansas' David Herrerias, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 position.
Arkansas (2-1) responded with a straight-set victory at the No. 5 singles position, as Santiago Munoz bested John Mee, 6-3, 7-6(3). After 13th-ranked Søren Hess-Olesen edged Arkansas' Giammarco Micolani 7-6(7) in the first set, the two-time All-American pulled away with a 6-0 second-set victory to give UT a 3-1 lead.
Junior Nick Naumann clinched the dual-match victory for the Longhorns by defeating William Ablanese in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Naumann's win gave UT a 4-1 lead as the remaining matches played to conclusion.
Senior All-American Lloyd Glasspool and sophomore George Goldhoff sat out of UT's first two matches with minor injuries.
Texas returns home to host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center. The Longhorns face Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 24, and Florida State or Michigan on Sunday, Jan. 25. UT will need two victories in the ITA Kick-Off to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago (Feb. 13-16).
