AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State (3-5, 2-3 Big 12) knocked off Texas (3-5, 2-3 Big 12) by a 24-0 count Saturday evening at Jack Trice Stadium.
Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes led the Horns with his 58 yards on the ground and 59 yards in the air via six completions. Daje Johnson led the Horns' receiving contingent with six catches for 37 yards. Linebacker Peter Jinkens notched a game-high nine tackles and two sacks. Cornerback Davante Davis added three pass break-ups.
Iowa State drove 66 yards on its second possession and took a 7-0 lead behind Mike Warren's three-yard touchdown run with 8:38 left in the first quarter.
The Cyclones threatened to add a second touchdown late in the first half, but Texas cornerback Duke Thomas tipped a Joel Lanning pass that UT safety Jason Hall swatted out of the hands of Iowa State's Quenton Bundrage in the end zone.
ISU's Cole Netten booted a 27-yard field goal on the next play to give the Cyclones a 10-0 lead they took into halftime.
Iowa State pushed its lead to 17-0 when Lanning hit Dondre Daley for a 19-yard touchdown with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. Joshua Thomas added a one-yard touchdown run to extend the Cyclones' lead to 24-0 with 2:10 left in the game.
Texas took over on its own 18 and drove deep into Iowa State territory on the game's final possession. Swoopes hit running back Johnathan Gray for five yards to the 23 before finding tight end Andrew Beck for 22 yards to the Texas 45. Swoopes ran for 11 yards to the ISU 44 and six yards to the Cyclones' 38 before finding Johnson for 15 yards to the Iowa State 23-yard line.
On fourth down from the ISU 18, Swoopes ran 13 yards for first and goal at the Iowa State five-yard line. Swoopes lofted a fade toward Marcus Johnson in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete as time expired.
Texas returns home to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium next Saturday (Nov. 7) when it hosts Kansas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT. The game will air nationally on Longhorn Network.
