AUSTIN, Texas – With the conclusion of conference championships this weekend, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has announced its Post-Regular Season Bowerman Watch List. Texas sprinter Courtney Okolo is still among the favorites to win the award.
Okolo has been on the list from the initial preseason announcement and all through indoor season as well.
This weekend, Okolo defended her Big 12 Conference title in the 400 meters, clocking in at 51.55 seconds. She also finished fourth in the 200 meters and ran on the victorious 4x400 relay.
Okolo currently ranks second the NCAA in the 400 meters with her time of 50.99 seconds at the Michael Johnson Classic. Okolo also has contributed significantly to the 4x400 meter relay with Texas ranking No. 2 behind Florida. Texas also ranks eighth in the 4x100. Okolo also helped the Longhorns win the prestigious Penn Relays and successfully defend their 4x400 title at the meet.
During indoor season, Okolo won her first indoor title in the 400 meters and ran on the championship winning 4x400 meter relay that posted the No. 5 time in collegiate history.
Okolo was a finalist for The Bowerman in 2014 after winning the outdoor title in the 400 meters and breaking the collegiate record at the Big 12 Championships with a time of 50.03 seconds. She was a force in the event both indoors and out and helped Texas win the 4x400 meter relay at the NCAA outdoor meet while setting an NCAA Championship meet record.
Texas junior sprinter Morolake Akinosun also was listed among others receiving votes. She received one top 10 vote to put her just outside the official watch list following her impressive performance at the Big 12 Conference Championships.
Akinosun successfully defended her 100 and 200 meter titles and also ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays at the conference meet to score 25 points for the Longhorns.
This post-regular season list saw one newcomer and two athletes formerly on the list returned. Mississippi State's Erica Bougard, Clemson's Natoya Goule and South Carolina's Jeannelle Scheper joined the top 10 this time around.
Okolo along with Oregon's Jenna Prandini and Remona Burchell of Alabama have been on every watch list this season.
