02.23.2016 | Women's Golf
Junior Haley Mills finished lower than six players individually ranked in the top 25.
NEW ORLEANS – Texas Women's Golf climbed one spot on Tuesday to finish fifth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl as junior Haley Mills posted a season-low tie for third.
The Longhorns finished fifth in a field that featured six teams in the top 13 (ranked by golfstat), while Mills finished better than six players individually ranked in the top 20.
Mills followed her rounds of 72 and 70 with a third-round 70 to finish every round at or under par for her third finish in the top-six this season after making three birdies and one bogey on Tuesday.
Karcher also posted a top-25 finish with a tie for 25th for her lowest finish so far this season. Karcher followed her second-round 72 with another 72 to complete the tournament at 4-over par.
Sophomore Sophia Schubert was not far behind with her 5-over par performance, finishing in a tie for 31st.
Junior Julia Beck finished at 15-over par, while senior Tezira Abe concluded in 76th.
Florida won the tournament with a 2-under 862, while Michigan State's Sarah Burnham and LSU's Sydney Cavin shared medalist honors.
Texas will resume its spring season at the UNF Collegiate on Monday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 8 at Jacksonville Golf & Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the tournament: I am pleased with our performance this week. Finishing in the top five in this strong field was a nice showing for us and a sign of what this team can do. English Turn is an extremely tricky golf course. The greens are very small and getting up and down here is a difficult task. Constant crosswinds makes club selections very difficult as well, but overall we handled it very well.
On the spring season so far: I like where we are at this point in the season, but I know that we will continue to get better as we move through the spring. For now, we will rest for a bit, but begin to prepare for Jacksonville in the coming days.
On Haley Mills: Haley played great this week. Her first round was very solid. Her birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle-par finish in round two is as good a finish as I have ever seen—it was spectacular. And then to shoot 70 today in the toughest weather we had all week was simply outstanding. She came really close to getting the W this week and definitely had a chance at the end. She's doing a lot of things really well right now and getting better each week. It's fun to watch.
On Sophia Schubert: I was really proud of Sophia's comeback in rounds two and three after she started the tournament slowly. It's nice to see a player have a rough round and simply put it behind them and forget about it. It's perhaps one of the most important skills to have in our sport.
On Natalie Karcher: Natalie's round two and round three were very strong rounds for us as well. It has been a while since Natalie has competed, so I wasn't sure what she would be capable of this week—I was very pleased with what she produced. Her 72 in today's final was a big round for us.
On the highlight of the week: The highlight of the week might have been Tez's 3 on number nine today. She had gone 7-8 in rounds one and two on that hole, so it was in her crawl. For her to make birdie today was pretty cool. We were all wondering what she would do there today.
