Top-ranked Longhorns claim the 200-yard medley relay, 800-yard freestyle relay and the one-meter diving event.
AUSTIN, Texas – Top-ranked Texas made a clean sweep of the opening night of competition Wednesday as the 2016 Big 12 Championships kicked off at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Texas won its 12th straight Big 12 crown in the 200 medley relay, as freshman John Shebat joined senior John Murray and sophomores Joseph Schooling and Brett Ringgold to win at 1 minute, 24.34 seconds, good for the No. 7 time in the nation and the No. 9 all-time mark at UT.
Senior Cory Bowersox claimed his second Big 12 title on one-meter and fourth league crown overall, as he won the one-meter finals with 397.00 points. Junior Sean O'Brien took a close second behind Bowersox with his 392.80 points.
Texas finished off the evening sweep with its easy win in the 800 freestyle relay, where junior Jack Conger joined freshman Townley Haas, junior Clark Smith and sophomore Joseph Schooling to finish in 6:15.48, good for the No. 5 mark all-time at UT and No. 4 time in the nation this season.
"Our 200 medley relay was really good, our "B" medley relay was very good," said UT head coach Eddie Reese. "The 800 free relay was probably the best I've seen with four unshaved guys. I'd love for them to go a lot faster, but it's not the right time to do that. We know we're a lot better than that."
West Virginia leads the championship through night one with 130 points due to its four finalists in the one-meter finals. Texas holds second with 117 points while TCU sits in third with 92 points.
