Seventh-ranked Horns open the four-day meet by taking down the two-year-old school mark in the 200-yard medley relay.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 7 Texas eclipsed its school record while claiming the 200-yard medley relay, and the Horns captured the 800 freestyle relay to mark a clean sweep of night one at the 2016 Big 12 Championships.
Texas opened the meet by posting a dominant performance in the 200-yard medley relay, as juniors Tasija Karosas and Jordan Surhoff teamed with sophomores Mimi Schneider and Rebecca Millard to win in 1 minute, 36.32 seconds, good for the No. 8 time in the nation this season.
The relay topped the previous school mark of 1:36.69 set by Lily Moldenhauer, Gretchen Jaques, current Longhorn Brynne Wong and Ellen Lobb at the 2014 NCAA Championships. It marked the fourth straight Big 12 title for Texas in the event.
Karosas led off in 24.42 seconds before Surhoff picked up the breaststroke leg in 27.16. Schneider split 22.96 on the butterfly leg before Millard anchored in 21.78.
"My strategy was just to hit my walls and come off with a lot of power, and I hit my walls really well," said Surhoff of her breaststroke leg. "I wanted to make sure I hit my wall perfectly so Mimi [Schneider] would have a good start."
Texas wrapped the night by handily winning the 800 freestyle relay, as junior Madisyn Cox and freshman Quinn Carrozza joined Millard and Karosas to clock 7:00.41, good for the fourth-fastest time in the country and the No. 3 mark all-time at UT.
The Longhorns finished night one of the championships atop the team standings with 80 points. Kansas sits in second with 68 points while Iowa State holds third at 64. TCU and West Virginia are tied for fourth with 58 points.
Day two of the Big 12 Championships gets underway with a preliminary round at 10 a.m. CT.
