Addison advances to singles quarterfinals at NCAA Championships

All-America senior Breaunna Addison upsets Ohio State’s third-seeded Francesca Di Lorenzo in the round of 16.
TULSA, Okla. – Texas All-America senior Breaunna Addison staved off elimination and upset Ohio State's third-seeded Francesca Di Lorenzo in the singles round of 16 Friday at the NCAA Championships.
Addison knocked off Di Lorenzo by a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 count to reach the singles quarterfinals for a second time at the NCAA Championships after making a run to the semifinals as a first-semester freshman in 2013. The two-time Big 12 Player of the Year will take on Miami's eighth-seeded Sinead Lohan in the quarterfinals Saturday at noon CT.
"I started off a little slow, and I wasn't really settled down," Addison said. "I started to get a little bit better feel towards the middle of the second set. She had a match point in the second set, but I fought it off. You just never know what can happen."
Addison trailed one set and 5-4 in the second before saving a match point and breaking Di Lorenzo's serve for 5-all. Di Lorenzo broke back for 6-5 only to see Addison register another break of serve to force a second-set tiebreaker. Addison claimed the tiebreaker 7-2 to force the deciding third set.
Addison picked up a couple of early service breaks in set three and punched her ticket to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 third-set win.
Addison joined UT sophomore Dani Wagland in the doubles round of 16 later in the day. The 16th-ranked Texas tandem took the first set from Arizona State's 15th-ranked duo of Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho, 6-1.
ASU broke Texas to win the second set, 6-4 and force a super tiebreaker, a 10-point tiebreak played in lieu of a full third set. Addison and Wagland trailed 5-1 before pulling within 6-4. However, the Sun Devils closed out the tiebreak 10-6 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
