All-time Longhorns in the MLB Draft
The third and final day of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft saw two Longhorns selected—right-handed pitcher Morgan Cooper (34th round, Washington Nationals) and infielder Bret Boswell (40th round, Pittsburgh Pirates). Cooper and Boswell join Tres Barrera (sixth round, Nationals), Ty Culbreth (eighth round, Colorado Rockies) and five class of 2016 signees taken in this year's draft.
Cooper returned to the mound this season after missing all of 2015 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He finished with a 3-5 record and a 4.03 ERA, earning his first career complete game in his final outing of the season—a 15-3 win over Baylor in the Big 12 Baseball Championship tournament.
Boswell finished the year with a .241 average to go along with two homers and 20 RBI. He was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team after producing a .600/.650/.933 line in five games.
Texas also saw five of its class of 2016 signees taken in the draft.
On day one of the draft, left-handed pitcher Kyle Muller went in the second round to the Atlanta Braves. On day two, right-hander Mason Thompson was selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round and outfielder Conner Capel went to the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round. On the last day of the draft, right-handed pitcher Blair Henley was selected by the New York Yankees (22nd round) and shortstop David Hamilton was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels (28th round).
Underclassmen and prep players have until the amateur signing deadline of July 15 to sign professionally.
