Two Longhorns up for top award in collegiate track & field
AUSTIN, Texas – The USTFCCCA announced it will unveil the finalists for the 2016 Bowerman Award later this week with live webcasts for each reveal. Three finalists will be named from the list of 10 men and 10 women who were announced as semifinalists last week, and two Longhorns are currently up for the top award in collegiate track and field.
The women's list will be the first to be narrowed down to three finalists with a live webcast on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT on TheBowerman.org. Senior Courtney Okolo is one of the 10 semifinalists after her indoor/outdoor sweep of the 400 meters at the NCAA Championships and running anchor on both the winning 4x400 relays for the Longhorns. Okolo also broke her own collegiate record outdoors in the 400 with a time of 49.71 seconds.
The men's three finalists will be announced at 1 p.m. CT on Friday with another live webcast. Senior Ryan Crouser only had indoor eligibility this year for Texas but made the most of it as he won his fourth overall NCAA title in the shot put and tied the collegiate record at the Big 12 Championship.
The Bowerman Award winners will be announced in December at the 2016 USTFCCCA Covention in Orlando, Florida.
Created in 2009, The Bowerman, named after legendary former coach of the Oregon Ducks and co-founder of Nike, Bill Bowerman, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track and field athletes in the nation and has been called by some "The Heisman Trophy of Track and Field."
Since the award's inception, the USTFCCCA has recognized a number of athletes who are among the best in the world today. Past winners and finalists combined to win six medals at the 2012 London Olympics.
