Sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn scored her third goal of the season at the 46:02 mark
WACO, Texas – On Friday night in its Big 12 Conference-opening match on the road at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, Texas soccer (6-3-1, 0-0-1 Big 12) got a 47th minute goal from sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn in tying No. RV Baylor (7-3-1, 0-0-1 Big 12), 1-1 (2OT), and extending the Longhorns' unbeaten streak to a season-best four straight matches.
The goal marked the third of the season for Glenn and granted Texas a 1-0 lead just 1:02 into the second half. The Bears would tie the match just 6:20 later as defender Caitlin Schwartz finished a wide-open opportunity in a 1-v-1 situation from eight yards out.
Baylor led the Longhorns in total shots by a 14-8 count and 8-7 in corner kicks, while UT managed a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
"We're pleased tonight because we did some good things," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "It really comes down to more productivity in the final third, but what a battle. (Baylor's) is a tough style to play against. Lots of contact throughout the course of the match, but we did a lot of good things, and we'll be ready to go on Sunday."
Baylor's offense wasted no time getting something started early on, registering a corner in the opening minute of play. Off a feed into the middle, a header caromed the ball sideways back out near the right end line. The official's flag went up signaling offside on a return pass inside the 18.
The Horns settled into the match over the next few minutes, managing a great spell of pressure during the eighth minute, even though no shots resulted from the effort.
At the 9:34 mark, Baylor earned a foul approximately 27 yards out in the middle of the pitch. Bear forward Lauren Piercy stepped up and drove a hard shot that drifted just wide right of frame.
Texas freshman forward Cyera Hintzen did solid work in the 17th minute to earn a free kick for the Horns. Senior midfielder Julia Dyche stepped up and launched an ambitious effort from 30-plus yards out that forced Baylor goalkeeper Sara Martinson to have to tip the ball up and over the bar.
The Green & Gold missed a big chance at 20:13 as a cross from the right wing into the middle was shot on a one-timer by Piercy, but she mis-hit the try sending it rolling outside the left post.
The Longhorns put together a better spell of play over the next few minutes with Glenn playing a nice long ball up ahead to Hintzen. The Garland, Texas, native was marked closely and fired a shot from 15 yards out on the left side that was blocked away.
The UT pressure continued as Dyche forced a save from distance at 29:50, and freshman forward Kyra Falcone tried her luck from 18 yards out on the right wing but had her effort blocked at 36:25.
At 40:24, Baylor's Ashley York attempted a shot from the right side that took a tough short hop in front of senior goalkeeper Paige Brown. The UT net minder had it escape from her clutches briefly before corralling it.
Right out of the halftime break, Texas got on the board to take a 1-0 lead. Off a BU turnover, a ball bounced right to Glenn. She pivoted quickly and launched a try from 30 yards out that tipped off the fingertips of Bear goalie Martinson before finding the right side netting.
That score seemed to ignite Baylor in its desperate search for an equalizer as the Bears started sending wave-after-wave of pressure into Texas' defensive third.
Off a corner in the 48th minute, BU midfielder Julie James delivered a header that ventured wide left of frame. Then just 1:27 later forward Raegan Padgett forced a Brown stop at the right post from eight yards out.
All the Baylor pressure finally paid dividends at 52:22 with the equalizing score to tie the match at 1-1. A pass played to the left edge of the 18-yard box was headed toward the middle. Schwartz had the ball drop right to her in space, and she scored easily in a 1-v-1 situation from eight yards.
The Bears threatened again off a corner in the 59th minute as Brown was forced to go up strong in a crowd to make a catch.
Each team had solid scoring chances down the stretch in the second half with Baylor midfielder Julie James (blocked) and forward Sarah King (wide left) attempting shots, while Texas midfielder Kayra Dollas had a try blocked at 77:22 and senior forward Jasmine Hart forced a Martinson save at 78:13.
Texas earned an 86th minute corner with the eventual feed being sent into the middle by Dyche. There was a collision inside the 18 between Hintzen and a Baylor defender with both players ending up on the turf. No call would result of the action as play continued.
BU got one final chance in regulation off a corner with 48 seconds left, but Texas cleared the ball out of danger to send the teams to overtime.
The Burnt Orange & White had the first opportunity in the opening extra-session as Adams tracked down a loose ball on the left wing and fired a drive right into Martinson's arms from 13 yards out at 92:58.
The Bears answered right back as York shot inches wide of the left post at 94:50.
UT hearts skipped a beat briefly at 99:08 as another York effort hit off Brown hands at the left post and headed towards the middle of the six-yard box. The Jackson, Mo., native recovered quickly, however, by racing over to corral the loose ball.
With opportunities more scarce in the second OT, junior forward Olivia Brook did some strong work in the right corner for Texas in the 108th minute. She eventually crossed a ball into the middle where Hart headed a ball towards frame that was blocked.
Baylor managed the match's final chance with 1:13 left as a feed played into the 18 dropped right in front of an onrushing Brown. The UT keeper was able to leap and corral the bouncing ball before a foul call ended the play.
