Women’s Golf, Hoffman win Lady Paladin
09.25.2016 | Women's Golf
The Longhorns take home their first tournament crown since 2011.
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Texas Women's Golf fired a third-round 286 to win the Lady Paladin, led by freshman Emilee Hoffman's medalist honors on Sunday at Furman University Golf Course.
The Longhorns' victory marks the first under Head Coach Ryan Murphy and the first since 2011, when the squad won the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Hoffman's medalist honors mark the first time a Texas player has won an event since Bertine Strauss won the PING/ASU Invitational in spring of 2015.
Hoffman carded a third-round 70, following a record-breaking 65 on the first day and a 73 on day two to finish 6-under par. Her final score of 210 is the fourth-lowest in Texas Women's Golf history.
She started the day with a dramatic front nine, making birdie-bogey-birdie on the first three holes and followed with another birdie on hole six's par-5. She made another bogey on seven, but closed the front nine with a birdie to make the turn at 2-under. She went on to make nine-straight pars to finish 2-under par and secure the win.
Junior Sophia Schubert also posted a top-five finish after firing a third-round 73. She made two birdies and three bogeys to finish 2-under par for the tournament.
Freshman Greta Völker finished under par with a third-round 71 to tie for 15th. She began the day with a bogey and made four-straight pars before making another bogey on six, but closed out the front nine with three-straight birdies to make the turn at -1. She shot even par on the back nine to stay under and finish with a 1-over 217 for the weekend.
It marks Völker's second-straight top-15 event after finishing in a tie for 10th at the Longhorns' first tournament.
Freshman Dominique Galloway posted a top-25 finish for Texas with her third-round 72.
Galloway made two birdies and three bogeys on the front nine and one birdie on the back to make even par and tie for 24th.
Senior Julia Beck carded a 75 on the third day to tie for 31st.
As a team, Texas finished with an 873 at 11-under par, two strokes ahead of runner-up Furman on its home course. Hoffman defeated Furman's Alice Chen by one stroke.
The Longhorns will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the Jim West Invitational at the Carlton Woods Golf Club.
Post-Tournament Quotes
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the win: I am absolutely thrilled for our team. It was a terrific team effort this week and we needed every bit of it.
On the individual performances: Individually, there were several great performances, particularly from Emilee. Her opening 65 was stellar and then to go out there today and shoot 70 when she needed to was just outstanding. I am very proud of her play this week and very happy with the energy she has brought to our team, along with Greta and Dominique.
I'm also very proud of Sophia and Greta's play this week. Neither would say that they are completely satisfied with how they played, but they both still managed the course very well and produced some good scores for us.
Also, Dominique and Julia gave us two very good rounds. Particularly Julia's second-round 7 and Dom's 72 today were very much needed.
On the team: Overall, I am very pleased with the team's performance. I like where we are at the moment.
Freshman Emilee Hoffman
On the win: It feels great to get my first collegiate win. I was just trying to stay patient today and play my own game. I'm really excited about our team win too!
