Sophomore midfielder Kayra Dollas’ first goal of the season at 61:10 gave Texas a short-lived lead
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium, a Haley Woodard goal at the 103:08 mark helped Oklahoma State (6-5-2, 1-2-0 Big 12 Conference) complete a late rally to defeat Texas soccer (6-5-1, 0-2-1 Big 12 Conference) in double overtime, 2-1.
Longhorns sophomore midfielder Kayra Dollas gave UT a short-lived lead on her first goal of the season at 61:10 off the second assist of the year from freshman defender Emma Jett. OSU got a score from forward Courtney Dike to dead-lock things in the 71st minute before Woodard's OT winner sealed three points for the Cowgirls.
The Burnt Orange & White led the way in total shots by an 18-12 count and 16-2 in corner kicks while the two teams tied at 8-8 in shots on goal. The 16 corner kicks for the Longhorns came up just one short of equaling the school record of 17 set at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi back on Sept. 5, 2014.
The first chance of the match went Oklahoma State's way off a corner as defender Laurene Tresfield headed a ball that was caught out of the air for one of six saves on the night by Texas goalkeeper Paige Brown.
Texas responded right back with a pair of opportunities of its own as sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn had a slow-rolling shot blocked at 4:19 and freshman forward Cyera Hintzen fired wide right of frame from 14 yards out at 6:00.
Brown was called back into action again in the 10th minute as OSU forward Mario Zoller forced a save at the left post on a shot from 12 yards out.
At the 12:36 mark, Oklahoma State's Julia Lenhardt tried a shot from 23 yards out that landed on the top of the netting for a goal kick.
The momentum turned back in favor of the Longhorns over the next few minutes as senior forward Jasmine Hart, Dollas and Hintzen all forced stops from Cowgirl net minder Michaela Ongaro from 14:48-20:25.
With the teams battling things out in the midfield throughout the majority of the remainder of the opening stanza, OSU nearly struck late in the 40th minute. Off a UT turnover, a quick run up the wing by Woodard resulted in a shot from 14 yards out. Brown made a full dive to push the ball out the right before it was cleared out of danger.
Out of the halftime break, Texas junior defender Monique Iannella worked the ball strongly on the left side before passing middle. Hintzen received the ball inside the 18, turned quickly and launched a left-footed shot that drifted high of frame at 47:01.
The breakthrough finally came at 61:10 off a corner kick for the Longhorns. Jett delivered a ball to the back post where Dollas was waiting to head a shot in the upper 90 to grant UT a 1-0 lead.
Texas' lead lasted just 8:54 on the clock as the Cowgirls set up for a long free kick. Defender Niki McKnight delivered a perfect ball to the top left corner that hit just off the fingertips of the leaping Brown before ricocheting off the underside of the crossbar. The ball dropped down to the left off the line and traveled across the goal mouth where Dike was waiting on the doorstep to finish and tie things at 1-1.
Hintzen nearly granted UT back the advantage at 77:30 as her shot from just inside the 18 had to be tipped up and over the bar by a leaping Ongaro.
OSU nearly scored an own goal, with approximately 11:30 to go in regulation, as a clearance of a Jett feed into the middle was headed straight at Ongaro forcing her to react quickly to tip it wide right.
Each team had a great chance over the final two-and-a-half minutes as midfielder Anna Beffer fired wide right at 87:28 and Glenn launched a shot right at the keeper from 15 yards out at 88:27.
In the first "sudden victory" OT, Oklahoma State's Zoller started off the offensive opportunities with a 14-yard try that was stopped by Brown.
Hintzen then followed with an attempt from distance for Texas at 91:32, but her effort ventured wide right of frame.
Texas senior midfielder Julia Dyche had the best final opportunity of the opening extra session as her long free kick from near midfield had to be tipped wide of the goal mouth by Ongaro.
The Longhorns earned a corner kick just 1:39 into the second OT, but couldn't register a shot as the OSU defense cleared the ball away from danger.
The end finally came at 103:08 as Beffer played a ball up the left wing to Woodard. While marked, she dribbled ahead into the 18 and drilled home her fifth score of the season from eight yards to end the 2-1 (2OT) Cowgirl victory.
Texas Post-Match Quotes – vs. Oklahoma State
Texas head coach Angela Kelly
On the team's second half performance: I think we continued to maintain possession and, overall, we did some really great things. Our spacing was great, we certainly had more of the ball over the course of the game, and we had opportunities to put more than one goal in the back of the net. We have to continue to create like we were but be a little bit more dangerous in the attacking box. It comes down to that.
On how frustrating it is to lose a 1-0 lead: It is, most importantly, the results. I think we did some great things last weekend and weren't on the end of the positive results, obviously getting a tie and a point at Baylor. We're putting in effort and we're doing a lot of great things, and when you don't then get the joy and the reward, that can wear on you. But that's not even an option for us. The option is that we continue to grow, do the good things and have an increased hunger in the attacking third.
On what the team can do more tactically: We have the match analysis, and we'll look at where we possess the ball. Their keeper had to tip a ball over the bar, we had the ball inside the six and a girl trapped it against the post… there were numerous opportunities. In the first five minutes, we had opportunities. Now, it's just going ahead and taking the game and taking Sunday's game. They're little things, but you need to make momentum go your way.
On a season-high 16 corner kicks and creating opportunities: It's more than close competitively. If you want to figure out the possession in a game, being able to organize in someone's defensive third to equate a corner kick is a good idea, and it was 16-2. But still, it's now converting. Their defenders stepped in a couple times and blocked some of our balls that came through the seam. Our backs did the same thing. It was a battle, and we just have to get the momentum to go our way.
On what message she will send the team going into Sunday's game against Kansas: There is no other option other than to get yourself organized. You need to have the best forgetful memory that's ever occurred, and you have to organize yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. That's going to be the message.
Sophomore midfielder Kayra Dollas
On not being able to close out games and capitalize upon 1-0 leads in three straight matches: It's always a concern if you can't close out games, but I think that if we keep practicing, you know keep our heads up, it's just one game at a time... need to keep moving forward.
On the turnaround in order to get a first Big 12 win on Sunday: Well we've got to recover our bodies. Tomorrow we'll do recovery, and Sunday we've got to come out hard. You know, finish the first half, and then once we actually put away a goal, we have to keep putting them away.
On the team's mindset after getting an early lead: I mean, every team probably gets more comfortable once you score. But I mean, our team just needs to work on getting less comfortable and keep scoring, keep scoring, keep scoring so they don't get comfortable on the other side either.
On the process of scoring her goal: Yeah, I it was off a corner. it was like a perfect ball. One of my best friends went out (with an injury) and I wanted to score for her. So, I saw the back post, and I just aimed right for it, and it went in.
