The White squad pulled even in the annual Fall World Series with a 9-7 win on Monday night.
AUSTIN, Texas—The Orange squad erased a seven-run deficit but the White team pulled out the 9-7 win in game two of Texas Baseball's Orange & White Fall World Series on Monday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With the series knotted at one game apiece, the decisive finale will take place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT.
White got out to a quick start off Orange starter Blair Henley. David Hamilton opened the ballgame with an infield single and Kody Clemens followed with an RBI double down the line to put White up 1-0.
With one out, Clemens stole third and catcher D.J. Petrinsky added an RBI triple to left-center to make it 2-0. After Petrinsky scored on a wild pitch, Duke Ellis drew a walk to put a man aboard for Zach Zubia.
Zubia, who broke the Northwoods League single-season home run record this summer, took a 2-0 pitch way over the center field fence to put the White team up 5-0 in the first.
After a pair of scoreless frames from White starter Josh Sawyer, his side added some more cushion. Austin Todd led off the inning with a walk and Petrinsky followed with an single. Ellis then added a fielder's choice RBI and back-to-back singles from Zubia and Turner Gauntt made it a 7-0 ballgame.
Orange would not go quietly, however. In the bottom of the third, the home team battled back. Tate Shaw was hit with a pitch and eventually came around to score on Michael McCann's sacrifice fly. Sawyer loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and a pair of walks before Ryan Reynolds roped a double to center to make it 7-4.
Orange added another in the fourth, this time off freshman Michael Streitmann, thanks to a Sam Bertelson RBI single. In the fifth, the Orange side tied it off an RBI double from Bryson Smith and an RBI groundout off the bat of Kamron Fields.
With the ballgame knotted at 7-7, it was time for the relievers to put in work. Andy McGuire was solid through 3.1 innings for the Orange side. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out three to send the game to the ninth in a tie. In the top half of the inning, however, White broke through once again. After Chris Fearon walked the first two batters he faced, Bennett Inoff entered in relief. Ellis drove in the go-ahead run with an infield hit before Turner Gauntt's single gave the Orange side a two-run advantage.
For the White team, Beau Ridgeway was dominant. He tossed 4.2 shutout innings, allowing just two walks and one hit while fanning four. With a 9-7 lead in the final frame, he allowed a single before a pop-up and a 6-4-3 double play ended the ballgame.
The two sides will meet again in a decisive game three on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Admission and parking are free and it will be broadcast on Longhorn Network.
