Texas equaled the 2006 Longhorns for the longest unbeaten streak in school history at 13 matches
AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in front of a season-high 1,742 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium, No. 7 Texas soccer (11-0-2, 3-0-2 Big 12 Conference) equaled the 2006 Longhorns for the longest unbeaten streak in school history at 13 matches with a 1-1 (2OT) tie against TCU (9-4-1, 3-1-1 Big 12 Conference).
With the dead-lock, the Burnt Orange & White continue alongside No. 1 UCLA (11-0-1) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (11-0-2) as the lone unbeaten teams (with ties) in all of NCAA Division I women's collegiate soccer.
Junior midfielder Kayra Dollas got the Longhorns on the board, off a corner taken by sophomore defender Emma Jett (second assist of 2017), during the 36th minute by heading home her second goal of the season. For the Horned Frogs, midfielder Karitas Tomasdottir tied the match late in regulation on a goal at 84:22.
Early on in the contest, it was TCU with more of the possession, but Texas earned the match's first corner at 5:14.
The Horned Frogs continued their pressure over the next few minutes (6:10-10:23) as midfielder Yazmeen Ryan, forward McKenzie Oliver and midfielder Emma Heckendorn all had shots blocked by UT defenders.
After great build-up play by the Horns, Texas' first shot of the match came at the 9:49 mark as junior midfielder Katie Glenn tried her luck on a one-timer from 20 yards only to have it go well high.
During the 14th minute, Longhorns sophomore forward Cyera Hintzen made a move to beat two TCU defenders near the right end line and tried to head middle. She went down inside the 18, but no call was made as play continued.
TCU had a great chance to take the lead at 20:30 as Oliver made a great move of her own past a UT defender near the left end line. Moving into the left edge of the 18, she unleashed a bending 15-yard shot that traveled just a couple of feet over the cross bar.
Only 2:41 later, the Horned Frogs were at it again as a cross from the right side dropped near the left post. Marked tightly, defender Tijana Djuricek tried a sliding attempt only to have the ball chip straight up and over the woodwork for a goal kick.
Back at the other end, Texas freshman midfielder Haley Berg did strong work on the right side before delivering a cross to the left edge of the 18. Waiting was Jett, who unleashed a left-footed effort that was saved by TCU keeper Katie Lund. A rebound popped straight out to marked UT redshirt sophomore forward Mikayla Flores, but her follow-up try under duress proved wide of the left post.
After Glenn forced another TCU save on a long try at 28:04, the Horned Frogs earned a free kick just outside the top of the 18 during the 33rd minute. Two quick touches freed up a player inside the box with a potential 1-v-1 opportunity, but her first touch betrayed her as Texas cleared the ball away.
Finally, with both teams having registered numerous scoring chances, it was Texas that nabbed a 1-0 lead off a set piece. Jett delivered the ball in from the right corner towards the back post. Racing into the play was Dollas, who leapt over a marker to head the ball just inside the woodwork from about a yard out at 35:50.
Out of the halftime break, both teams managed good spells of possession but neither had a solid scoring chance with a few scattered blocked or wide shots.
At the 70:54 mark, TCU's Allison Ganter fired a shot from outside the top of the box that bounced in harmlessly for UT sophomore netminder Nicole Curry's only save of the match. The shot on goal marked the first allowed by Texas' defense during a stretch of 194:37 over three matches dating back to the end of regulation play in the Texas Tech contest on Sept. 29.
After a Horned Frog defender fell down in the 76th minute, Berg dribbled up the right wing and crossed a tantalizing ball through the middle of the 18. Unfortunately, none of her teammates were able to get to the feed as it traveled all the way through.
With time beginning to run short in regulation, TCU's offense found an extra gear in looking for an equalizer. Off a solid spell of pressure, the Horned Frogs earned a free kick deep out in the middle of the pitch.
Off a delivery in towards the top of the six, the ball dropped into the crowd and ricocheted out to Tomasdottir, who finished into the left of the net from 10 yards out to tie the score at 1-1.
Texas forced one final Lund stop in regulation, as junior forward Alexa Adams teed up a shot at 86:14, but the teams would require overtime to settle things.
Early on in the first OT, TCU managed a pair of solid chances. During the 92nd minute, the Frogs had their best opportunity, putting the ball in the back of the net only to see the flag up signaling offside.
The Longhorns managed better possession over the remainder of the first extra session, but couldn't register a shot.
TCU registered the only two shots of overtime for either team during the second extra period, but both were blocked harmlessly by UT's defense at 104:35 and 104:50 as the squads settled for the 1-1 tie.
Texas Post-Match Quotes
Head coach Angela Kelly
On Texas' performance: I think that it took us a little bit to get settled in, and we did some okay things in the first half. We needed to take our opportunities better, get the ball on the floor. We just lacked a little bit of composure in the attacking third, which is uncharacteristic for this squad. No excuses, TCU battled, and we just needed to put one away. Kayra's goal was fantastic and unfortunate that their goal was on a little bit off a miscommunication. Obviously, throughout the course of the second half of the season, that traditionally doesn't happen. What can you say? It's thirteen games in now, and this team's given us everything they have. They were a little flat tonight, so that's my job as the head coach, to regroup, organize and to figure out why, sharpen the edge and get ourselves ready for next Friday.
On the team preparing for the next two games on the road: Well I think we just, everybody just needs to take a deep breath and be a little introspective, just understand what it takes at the highest level. It's a commitment which our players have, but if you think about it, what this young team's doing and the amount of teams that are coming after them, we're going to use it as a learning environment. As we continue to have successes, the bullseye is going to continue to get bigger. It's our job as a staff to help our young players to accept, understand and surpass that.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Curry
On the team's defensive performance: I think we really did do well with staying with our marks. They were pretty persistent on the right side, so we kind of knew that was going to happen. I think we could have come out a little bit better prepared mentally, but overall I think that we did all right.
On what the team needs to do next: I think just coming together as a team and reevaluating. As we say, resetting. Just going forward and making the decision to compete to win. We worked so hard to get here, so I don't think any of us are going to let it slip away.
Junior midfielder Kayra Dollas
On Texas' offensive performance: I think that TCU is just a really hard-working team. I think that we could have done a way better job of moving off of other players for each other. Every time we did get the ball back, defensively we didn't have as many open opportunities for some people because they were pressing us so hard. I think that them pressing us so high up on the field made it not as easy for us to get down the field.
On her goal from a corner: Usually I'm not on corner kicks. We have a new corner kick, so I'm kind of hidden. It's hard for me to see the ball, but Emma always places the ball perfectly right towards the back post. So, I try my best to just get up and get over it and not try to hit it over. I saw the opportunity and she (Jett) hit it perfectly, right down the line, so I just took the shot with my head.
