AUSTIN, Texas – Antwuan Davis had three takeaways in the first half to lead The University of Texas (5-5, 4-3) to a 42-27 victory over Kansas (1-9, 0-7) at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Texas defense forced a total of four turnovers in the first half, with three leading to touchdowns, as the Longhorns jumped out to a 28-7 first quarter lead. Making his second start of the season, Davis intercepted two passes, the first of his career, and recovered a fumble, while adding three tackles on the day.
Texas wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on the first play from scrimmage with a 49-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele to senior wide receiver Lorenzo Joe to take a 7-0 lead just nine seconds into the game.
Kansas had tried to catch the Longhorn kickoff return team sleeping, attempting an onside kick to start the game, but junior receiver John Burt was ready and jumped on the squibbed kick at the Kansas 49.
Smokey the Cannon remained busy throughout the first quarter, as the Longhorns dominated on both sides of the ball to score four touchdowns in the opening frame.
The Longhorn defense got in on the scoring midway through the first quarter when Davis intercepted a pass at the Kansas 16 and returned it for the score, giving Texas a 14-0 lead with 8:05 remaining in the first quarter.
The interception returned for a touchdown was the fifth on the season for Texas, tying a UT record first set in 1987 and then matched in 2000.
Kansas answered on their next possession, narrowing Texas' lead to 14-7 on a 5-yard touchdown pass that closed out a 6-play, 56-yard drive.
Freshman running backs Daniel Young and Toneil Carter did all the work on the Longhorns' next possession, combining to chew up 60 yards on just five plays to push the lead to 21-7 with a 23-yard touchdown run by Carter. Young netted the 37 yards on four carries, including a 21-yarder on a rush up the middle to the Kansas 23. Carter closed out the drive a play later to push the lead back to points with 3:42 to go in the first.
Young finished the day with career-highs of 21 carries and 67 yards.
The Jayhawks next possession was a short one, as three plays into their drive senior safety Jason Hall intercepted a pass at the Kansas 34 and returned it to the 9-yard line.
Freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger entered the game and after completing a 1-yard pass to Burt, he faked a handoff to Carter, then hit freshman tight end Cade Brewer in the end zone to extend the Texas lead to 28-7 with 1:55 to play in the first quarter.
On the day, Buechele and Ehlinger combined to complete passes to 10 different receivers, the fourth straight game at least 10 Longhorns have caught a pass.
Senior wide receiver Lorenzo Joe set career-highs with five receptions and 98 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Collin Johnson hauled in 6 catches for 63 yards.
The Jayhawks found the end zone early in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-14 with 13:11 remaining in the half.
A Texas fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave Kansas possession at the Texas 24 with an opportunity to pull within a score, but the Longhorn defense allowed only five yards on the drive and the Jayhawks settled for a 36-yard field goal to make the UT lead to 28-17.
Davis picked up his second turnover of the game with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter after the Jayhawks misplayed a punt by junior Michael Dickson at the Kansas 23 and Davis recovered it at the 22-yard line.
Texas scored nine plays later on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey, the first rushing touchdown of his career, giving Texas a 35-17 lead with 4:49 left in the half.
The Jayhawks were on the verge of scoring late in the half, moving to the Texas 4-yard line with about a minute to play, but Davis came up big again, intercepting a pass in the end zone with 58 seconds remaining to end the threat.
Both offenses drove into opposing territory on their opening drives of the second half, but were unable to come away with points. Kansas changed that on their next possession, driving to the UT 15 before connecting on a 32-yard field goal with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 35-20.
Kansas threatened again early in the fourth quarter after an interception set them up at the UT 37 with 12:07 remaining to play. After junior safety DeShon Elliott tackled a Jayhawk receiver behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of six and junior linebacker Breckyn Hager registered a sack for a 4-yard loss, it appeared the Horns were going to escape unscathed, but an 18-yard run by Jayhawk quarterback Carter Stanley set up fourth-and-2 at the UT 29. A pair of 5-yard penalties on each side led up to a huge stop by junior linebacker Malik Jefferson, who broke through the line and to stop the try for a 3-yard loss.
Texas put the game out of reach with a 12-play, 68-yard touchdown drive on the next possession, punctuated by a 1-yard touchdown run by junior running back Chris Warren III pushing the Texas lead to 42-20.
Kansas added an 18-yard touchdown pass with eleven seconds remaining to wrap up the score with Texas up, 42-27.
The Texas defense held Kansas to 96 rushing yards, the fifth time this season they have surrendered less than 100 yards on the ground, the most since doing so six times in 2011.
Elliott, Jefferson and junior cornerback Davante Davis paced the Longhorns with seven tackles apiece, while Hall, Hager, sophomore defensive end Malcolm Roach and junior linebacker Anthony Wheeler each recorded a sack.
The Longhorns hit the road for their next game, matching up with the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown on Saturday, Nov. 18.
