Longhorns leave Charlottesville with wins over seventh-seeded Florida and the 11th-seeded Cowboys.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Tenth-seeded Texas (11-2) dropped the doubles point but used four singles wins to rally to a 4-2 victory over 11th-seeded Oklahoma State (8-3) Sunday in the consolation round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Longhorns leave Charlottesville with a 2-1 mark in the 16-team tournament with top-11 wins over the Cowboys and Florida.
Oklahoma State notched wins at the first and second doubles positions to assume a 1-0 match lead. Texas freshman Yuya Ito evened the match at one by way of his 6-3, 6-1 win over Artur Dubinski at fourth singles.
The Cowboys reclaimed the lead at first singles where Julian Cash knocked off UT freshman Christian Sigsgaard, 6-2, 6-4. Texas sophomore Harrison Scott evened the tally at two with his 11th straight singles win, as he held off OSU's Arjun Kadhe at third singles, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
Texas took the lead for good at sixth singles, where sophomore Rodrigo Banzer dealt Jurence Mendoza a 6-3, 6-3 defeat and set the stage for the clincher from Goldhoff at second singles.
Goldhoff dropped the first set to OSU's 48th-ranked Finzelberg at second singles, but behind an early service break in the second set, he prolonged the match with a 7-5 second-set win. Goldhoff jumped out to a 3-0 third-set lead before Finzelberg pulled within 4-3. Goldhoff registered a crucial service break for 5-3 and held serve in the ensuing game to finish off the clincher for Texas.
The Longhorns resumes dual-match competition on Friday (Feb. 24) when they host Wichita State. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. CT indoors at Weller Tennis Center on the grounds of UT Golf Club.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
This was a good win for us today. Oklahoma State has a really good team, and the Cowboys took it to us in the doubles. I didn't think we were quite as good as we had been (in doubles), but I give OSU credit for winning it. To lose the match Saturday against Wake Forest, lose the doubles this morning in an early match and then to come back the way we did in singles was really impressive. Everyone fought hard and it was nice to see George (Goldhoff) finish off the match. This was a great win and a good tournament overall. We're disappointed we didn't get to play in the semifinals, but I liked the way we bounced back. We have a lot of tennis in front of us.
